Descripe the Rational World Paradigm

Rational world paradigm: a system of logic employed by many researcher and professionals -> can be said to be the “opposite” of narrative paradigm. Fisher says that the narrative paradigm finds a way to overcome the struggles of the different branches of knowledge.

100

Whcih belief does the Narrative Paradigm promote?

Narrative paradigm promotes the belief that humans are storytellers -> values, emotions and aesthetic considerations ground our beliefs and behaviours.

We have the need to use narration as a rhetorical tool.
Storytelling is a natural human capacity across time and culture and we are more persuaded by a good story than by a good argument.

People judge the credibility of speakers by whether the stories have coherence and ring true.

100

How do people make decisions about which stories to accept?

People make decisions about which stories to accept on the basis of what makes sense to them or good reason.

People believe stories so to the extent that the stories seem internally consistent and truthful.

The world is a set of stories which we choose among. We experience life differently allowing us to recreate our lives

What is narration

Aany verbal of nonverbal interpretation which is arranged logically to generate meaning. It is symbolic actions – words and/or deeds – that have sequence and meaning for those who live, create and interpret them

200

What is narrative rationality

A standard for judging which stories to believe and which to disregard

200

What are the two principles that narrative rationality operates with?

Coherence and fidelity

200

Descripte coherence and the three different types of coherence

Coherence: determined whether a person accepts or rejects a narrative. It refers to the consistency of a narrative.

There are 3 different types of coherence; structural, material and characterological

Structural coherence: refers to the flow of the story -> stories lack structural coherence when the plot is unclear, stories are confusing, the one part does not lead to the next, etc.

Material coherence: the congruence between one story and other related stories -> if many stories but one contribute to the same explanation you are unlikely to believe the one odd story

Characterological coherence: the believability of the characters in the story -> if you don´t like a person you are unlikely to accept a story in which that person was shown in a good way and you would reject this story.

200

Descripe fidelity

Fidelity: the truthfulness or reliability of the story -> stories with fidelity rings true to the listener

The degree to which a story fits into the listener´s prior understanding

A story has fidelity when it provides good reasons to guide our future behaviour

300

What is the logic of good reasons?

The logic of good reasons: a set of values for accepting a story as true and worthy of acceptance; provides a method for assessing fidelity.

300

What sets the narrative paradigm´s logic of good reason apart from the rational-world paradigm´s?

The values
