Prudence Crandall was a Quaker who lived in Connecticut. She opened an all girls school for white Americans. She enrolled one African-American girl and continued teaching despite controversy. People in Connecticut were so against the teaching of African-Americans that she finally responded by teaching only African-Americans. Many of her students went on to college and became teachers in their own communities.

Dorothea Dix discovered that prison conditions were extremely bad and that mentally ill people were put in prison. She visited every prison on the east coast and put together documents about prison conditions. She presented these documents to the Legislature and prison reform laws were passed. Mentally ill people were removed from the prisons and placed in mental hospitals.
