Darry let his emotions get the best of him. He hit Ponyboy because he was scared and worried about Ponyboy being out too late.
What happens to Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally during the church fire?
They save the kids from the burning church. Ponyboy passes out due to smoke inhalation. Johnny is knocked out by a falling piece of timber and has severe burns. Dally's arm has some burns from getting Johnny out the window.
