Explain why Ponyboy likes to go to the movies alone.

He likes to get into the movies, live them like the actors.  Nobody in the gang likes books and movies like he does.

400

What do Pony and Johnny do instead of going home after the movies?  Describe the result.  (page 44)

They walk the girls home and Greasers pull up and tell Cherry and Marcia to get in the car. Johnny and Ponyboy stay outside and watch the stars and smoke , and Ponyboy ended up falling asleep and that made him late coming home. Ponyboy got in trouble by Darry because Pony was home really late.

400

According to Ponyboy, contrast Dally from the rest of the group. (page 10)

Dally was as wild as they get.  He had been arressted.  He was tougher, colder, and meaner

400

Discuss how Two-Bit got his nickname.  What is his real name?  (page 10)

He always had “two bits” of information.  He talked all the time. His real name is Keith.

400

Infer the reason for Dally’s inappropriate language with the girls at the movies

He probably wanted to “sound/look” tough.  To see if he could embarrass them.

The author used foreshadowing with the cliffhanger at the end of the chapter.  Explain.  Predict what might happen later in the story.

The foreshadow Ponyboy decides to run away from home after Darry slaps him. Ponyboy flees the house and runs to the vacant lot where he has left Johnny a short time before. ... Still, this church makes Ponyboy uneasy from the very beginning.  "Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn't get worse. I was wrong."

Explain the story of Mickey Mouse and Soda.  Why do you think it was included in the novel?  (page 39)

Mickey Mouse was Soda’s horse.  Not really but it was at the farm he worked on.  He loved that horse.  They sold him because he was valuable and they couldn’t afford another one.  They included it in the story to further express the difference between Socs and Greasers,  everything gets taken away from Greasers.

500

Explain the reference to watching the sunset.  Why is it an important part of the build up of the relationship between Cherry Valance and Ponyboy?  (page 40)

The sunset shows that they are from 2 different worlds with the same interest….the sunset. It was included to show that even Socs and Greasers may have something in common.

500

Discuss a rule that the Greasers follow, besides - stick together.  How do you think this rule came to be? (page 29)

Don’t get caught .  This is a rule because they could get split up.  Go to jail and reform school

500

Indicate how Two-Bit scares Johnny and Pony but not Dally. (page 27)

He came up from behind and grabbed their shoulders. It was scary for Johnny because when you don't know that someone is behind you and then they grab you shoulder it frightens you, and maybe he thought he was going to get jumped by a Soc again.
