It was Lyra's last wish and order she gave to him. Mirage was originally Lyra's pet and rescue she saved, raising him and practically becoming his mother. Mirage listens to anything Lyra says, and followed her word to protect Hailie with his life.

Atlas's little sister kills Hailie, because she was tricked into believing that Hailie was the reason everything was horrible and that taking her out would save the world. (She basically tricked herself into turning evil and enjoyed it enough to stay on the bad side).
