John Wycliffe became convinced that the Roman Catholic Church had strayed from its original doctrine and practice. As part of this, he emphasized the Bible as the supreme authority for the believers, replaced Jesus as the head of the church over the pope, criticized the doctrine of transubstantiation (bread and wine turn into the actual body and blood of Christ during communion) and rejected the practice of confessing sins to these church leaders.
