Queen Mary and Elizabeth I were half sisters and their dad was Henry VIII. Queen Mary was a Catholic and attempted to reunite England under a catholic banner after her father, Henry VIII, turned England Protestant. Queen Mary imprisoned Elizabeth I who was a Protestant out of fear she would take the throne from her. Queen Mary slaughtered Protestants earning the nickname Bloody Mary, and Elizabeth I eventually gained the favor of the people of England and rose to the throne where see was the Queen of England for 44 years.

European monarchs used the idea of secularism to separate church and state. The church help an immense amount of power during this time, they controlled land, could collect taxes, and the Pope was more powerful then most kings. Kings and Queens saw the Protestant Reformation to take control of their countries back and gain more power.
