What 2 paths can oxygen take to get into the body?

Nose and mouth.

100

What are the tiny air sacs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide?

Alveoli's

100

True or false: When you inhale, your rib cage moves up and out, and the diaphragm moves down.

True

100

What is the flap of tissue that prevents food from entering the trachea when you swallow?

epiglottis

200

What is the dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs is essential for breathing?

diaphragm

200

What is the life-sustaining gas that moves from the lungs into the blood?

Oxygen

200

True or false:The breathing process is ONLY ever involuntary.

False.  You can control your breathing if you think about it.

200

What is the sticky substance produced in the respiratory passages to trap dust and germs?

Mucus (boogers)

300

What is the larynx? Point to where it is located.

The voice box.  located in the throat

300

What is the waste gas that moves from the blood into the lungs to be exhaled?

carbon dioxide

300

What is the difference between a normal breath and a mox breath?

Normal breath is what we do on a day to day basis and typically involuntary.  A max breath is voluntary.

300

What are the tiny hairs in the trachea that keep bacteria out of our respiratory system?

Cilia

400

What moistens, warms, and filters the air before it travels downt the throat?

The nasal cavity.

400

What is the name of the process that involves inhaling oxygen and exhaling Carbon dioxide?

Respiration

400

What are 3 reasons why your lungs wouldn't be able to take in an equal amount to someone else's max breath?

smoking, age and size of lungs, a condition that effects the lungs.

400

What is a chronic disease where the airways narrow and become inflamed, making it hard to breathe?

Asthma

500

Describe the path that air travels if starting from the nose? (hint: think about the upside down tree)

Nose ---> Trechea ---> Bronchi's ---> Bronchioles ---> Alveoli's

500

Explain why we breath heavier when we work out or are doing something active?

Your body needs more oxygen and produces more carbon dioxide, so gas exchange happens faster by increasing your breathing and blood flow

500

How can you maintain good lung health?

By eating right and remaining active to build strength

500

WHat happens when we hold out breath?

You are not able to take in oxygen and unable to exhale CO2.  Your body builds up the amount of carbon dioxide as you cut off its access to oxygen. If you don't inhale or exhale you organs will begin to shut down.
