The Atonement was Jesus Christ taking upon himself all of our sins, so it could be possible for us to return to our Heavenly Father. It appeased the justice (no unclean thing can enter the Kingdom of God) and mercy (God is love and loves us) so that we may have a chance.

Explain the difference between a reformation and a restoration.

To reform is to change what already exists; to restore is to bring back something in its original form. Thus, restoration of priesthood authority through divine messengers was the only possible way to overcome the Great Apostasy.
