Summarize the beginning of the book


At the start of the book Matt and his father build a cabin in Maine. Matt's father leaves to get his family and Matt is left alone to guard the cabin. Matt has to start hunting to feed himself. When a weary traveler shows up at the door Matt lets him in. When Matt wakes up he finds that the gun is missing. Now Matt must survive with no gun.

When a bear comes into the cabin and eats all the mollasus Matt is craving something sweet. Matt climbs up a tree to a bee hive. Matt is stung many times and unable to move. Two Indeins find Matt and bring him back to his cabin. When Matt gets better they teach eachother new skills. Attean teaches matt how to survive in the wilderness, and Matt teaches Attean to read.They form a kind of freindship.

One obstacle that Matt overcame was Attean's grandma's hate of white men. He overcame this by going to great lengths to save Attean's dog.

Summarize the end of the book

At the end of the book, Matt saves Atteans dog and gains the friendship of Atteans grandmother.  Later on Attean comes to tell Matt that he is going to try and find his manitou. Matt is both happy and sad because if Attean finds his manitou Matt thinks he will no longer come, but Matt knows this is an important part of Atteans life.Finally, Saknis and Attean come to Matt's cabin to say that he can come on the hunt with them. Matt declines because if he does he will never see his family again. Matt's family arrive and they are all content.
