Their experiences are alike because both of them are children when they leave and neither of them has a choice about leaving. Neither of them wants to leave home. They both have to go to school. They both have their language and heritage to keep them tied to their home. They will both come back to visit over the summer.

Their experiences are different because Grandpa was forced by the government to leave while John is leaving because his mom and step-dad are moving to Minnesota. John is going to school, but Grandpa had to live at a boarding school. At Grandpa's school, they cut his hair and made him eat soap for talking in Navajo. Whereas, John will live at home and be allowed to speak his language. Finally, John has his Grandpa to guide and comfort him.
