Inside A Volcano
Volcano Formation
Its Going to Blow
100
Its funnel shaped pit near the top of the central vent of a volcano.
What is a Crater ?
100
They are built from lava fragments called cinders. The lava fragments are ejected from a single vent and accumulate around the vent when they fall back to earth. They grow rapidly and soon approach their maximum size. They rarely exceed 250m in height and 500m in diameter.
What is a Cinder Cone Volcano ?
100
It is a large underground pool of liquid rock found beneath the surface of the Earth. The molten rock in such a chamber is under great pressure, and given enough time, that pressure can gradually fracture the rock around it creating outlets for the magma. If it finds a way to the surface, then the result will be a volcanic eruption.
What is a magma chamber ?
100
Lava.
Magma that has reached the earths surface?
100
Volcanic Blast.
When pressure is released and Volcanic matter is shot into the air.
200
Its a large semicircular depression that forms when the magma chamber below a volcano erupts
What is Caldera ?
200
Also called strato volcanoes, are formed by alternating layers of lava and rock fragments. This is the reason they are called composite. Strato volcanoes often form impressive, snow capped peaks which are often exceeding 2500 m in height, 1000sq.km in surface, and 400km3 in volume. Between eruptions they are often so quiet they seem extinct.
What is a Composite Volcanoes ?
200
It is the hottest part in the volcano. It is located at the bottom of the volcano.
What is core ?
200
Volcano plug.
When lava solidifies in the pipe of an extinct volcano?
200
Landslide or Avalanche.
When the side of a volcano begins to collapse and run downhill.
300
Its a wide land form that results from repeated nonexplosive eruptions.
What is Lava Plateau ?
300
They are huge in size. They are built by many layers of runny lava flows. Lava spills out of a central vent or group of vents. A broad shaped, gently sloping cone is formed. This is caused by the very fluid, basaltic lava which can't be piled up into steep mounds.
What is a Shield volcano ?
300
It is the layer of the volcano between the upper mantle and the core.
What is a lower mantle ?
300
Hot Spots.
Weak area in the earths crust through which magma may erupt ?
300
Tsunami
A huge wave caused by a undersea eruption and landslide.
400
Its a circular depression in the ground caused by volcanic activity. It is typically a basin, circular in form within which occurs a vent from which magma erupts as gases, lava, and ejecta.
What is a Crater?
400
They are a gently sloping volcano that emits mostly basaltic lava that flows in long lasting, relatively gentle eruptions, explosions are minimal. They can be very big.
What is a Shield Volcano ?
400
It is the layer on a volcano ,that is between the crust and the lower mantle.
What is the upper mantle ?
400
Pyroclastic Flow.
Ash, Lava, and Gas moving down the side of a Volcano.
400
Bomb
A rounded piece of newly harden lava which takes shape while flying threw the air.
500
They are formed by highly fluid (runny) basaltic lava during numerous successive eruptions through numerous vents without violent explosions
What is lava plateau ?
500
They are a cone shaped volcano whose steep sides are formed by loose, fragmented cinders that fall to the Earth close to the vent. The lava flows through a single vent that is usually only up to about 1,000 feet tall. There is usually a bowl-shaped crater at the top. As the gas-filled lava erupts into the air, the lava fragments into pieces and forms cinders.
What is a Cinder Cone Volcano ?
500
The magma chamber is on top but its the second layer in the volcano.
What is the crust ?
500
Magma.
A hot liquid that exists deep inside the earth.
500
Pumice
A Volcanic rock so full of gas bubbles that when it cool it floats.
