What is crept?
The cozy, orderly place where Roz spends the first half of the book working for Mr. Shareef. Be specific
What is Hilltop Farm?
The injured, stressed-out farmer who owns Roz at the beginning of the sequel.
Who is Mr. Shareef?
Roz uses this specific object to disguise her metal body while slipping away from the farm.
What is mud and plants/branches (or camouflage)?
As Roz sits in the tiny rowboat, she feels nervous because only an old piece of wood separates her from the murky depths of the ocean. Even though she is a robot, her electronic mind is screaming at her to be careful, a sensation the book describes as her robot version of these natural, deep-seated survival feelings.
What are instincts?
When light moves slowly and softly through small cracks or thin materials. It doesn't flood the room like a big lamp; it "leaks" in bit by bit.
What is seeping?
Roz hides inside this dark, quiet farm structure to study her old map and secretly repair her broken parts.
What is the old barn or tool shed.
The names of Mr. Shareef's two children who discover Roz can speak to animals.
Who are Jaya and Jad?
The loyal dog on the farm who agrees to help Roz escape by keeping her secrets and faking an alert.

This massive marine animal saves Roz from the murky depths of the ocean after her boat is destroyed.
Who is Coral the whale?
To talk or think about happy memories from the past. It is like taking a trip back in time in your mind.
What is Reminiscing?
This is the vast, unpredictable body of water that Roz must cross to get from the mainland back to her home island.
What is the ocean?
The fierce, intimidating leader of the wolf pack that stalks the farm and later hunts Roz.
Who is Shadow?
To escape the island safely without leaving footprints, Roz uses this mode of transportation across the water.
What is a rowboat?
The sheer size of the massive ocean waves destroys Roz's boat. This happens to the old rowboat when it crashes down hard after rising over the top of a giant wave.
What is splinters apart?
To be extremely tired, both in your body and in your mind. It is more than just being "sleepy"—it is the feeling you get after you have been working or worrying for a very long time.
What is weary?
Before reaching the ocean, Roz must travel through this cold, elevated environment where the air is thin and the ground is covered in ice and snow.
What are the mountains?
The name of the animal that Roz met after the hailstorm when she was seeking shelter.
Who is Sprinkles?
When Roz's rowboat breaks apart in the ocean, she has to cling to floating pieces of this to stay above water.
What is debris?
Roz and Brightbill are incredibly grateful to the whale for bringing them safely into the bay, but their good feelings quickly turn gloomy when they realize they aren't home yet, and Roz will have to do this to finally get back to her island.
What is cross another entire ocean?
These two vocabulary words describe violent, spinning liquids and the white, soapy foam that forms on top of them. (Must name both!)
What is churning and frothing?
The place she found shelter after the hailstorm.
What is the cabin?
The name of the character Roz and Brightbill met in the cliffs during their journey.
Who is Thud?
Roz utilizes this special ability—learned from her time on the island—to get the cows and other farm animals to cooperate and help her plan her exit.
What is speaking the animal language?
As Roz and Brightbill look out at "The New Land," their gloomy feelings get even worse because they realize that to keep moving forward, they must try to get through an overwhelming town filled with more of these four things than they have ever seen before. (Must name at least three!)
