Elements of Theater
The role that we normally play in theater. This term and performers must be present in order for it to be considered theater.
What is Audience?
This is anything being said by a character. This part makes up most of the script.
What is Dialogue?
This is an act of performing a drama. An example of this type of performance is Romeo and Juliet.
What is Dramatic Performance?
In this theater space the performance space is a big black room with black floors, walls, and ceilings. The seating in this theater space can be moved easily.
What is Black Box Theater?
This person designs the costume for a show. When designing the costumes they must consider who the character is, when the story takes place, and where the story takes place.
Who is the Costume Designer?
The people who are on stage performing as our characters. You must have this term and an audience in order for it to be considered theater.
What is a Performer?
This tells us who is saying the dialogue, and who is doing what on stage. There is a list with this information at the beginning of every script.
What is a Character?
This type of performance is used to amuse and entertain. An example of this type of performance is Funny Girl.
What is a Comedic Performance?
In this type of theater space the audience sits all around the stage. This is also known as Arena seating. The performers will always be facing and have their back to the audience.
What is Theater in the Round?
This person designs the lighting for a show. Making sure that the things on stage are seen, setting the atmosphere and time of day for the performance and keeping the performers safe.
Who is the Lighting Designer?
This is also known as a script. Contains dialogue, stage directions, characters, and acts/scenes.
What is Text?
This is what directors use to help block a scene. Usually written in italics or parenthesis or both.
What is Stage Directions?
This type of performance includes dialogue, singing, and dancing. An example of this type of performance is Hamilton.
What is Musical Theater performance?
In this theater space the audience sits facing the stage. This is the most traditional type of theater space. The audience can only see what is being presented backstage.
What is Proscenium?
This person oversees the stage crew. This person is second in command to the director, and wears a headset during the performance in order to cue the other backstage crew members.
Who is the Stage Manager?
The role of this person is to help the performers interpret and understand the text. Their main job is to block the stage using stage directions.
What is a Director?
This title is accompanied by numbers. This changes anytime that the location changes on stage. Two words.
What is Act/Scene
In this type of performance there is no script involved, everything is made up on the spot. The only rule of this performance is yes and.
What is Improv performance?
In this theater space the audience sits on three sides of the stage. The audience gets a closer view of the stage.
What is Thrust Stage?
This person is in charge of buying, creating, and maintaining all of the props that are used during a performance. In order to have this job you must have skills sewing, woodworking, painting, welding, and building.
Who is the Prop Master?
There are two types that go into this element: Visual and Non Visual. This includes everything seen and heard on stage during a performance.
What is Design Aspects?
This person writes the script. Famous examples include Shakespeare, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Lin Manuel Miranda.
What is a Playwright?
In this type of performance there is no dialogue, everything is sung. This is also a style of music. Examples of this performance include Madame Butterfly.
What is Operatic Performance?
This is the element of theater in which audience and performers come together.
What is Theater Space?
This person is in charge of ticket sales, maintaining the theater space, and guest relations. They take care of everything regarding the front of the house in a theater.
