Explain how we hear! i.e., How sound is transmitted from the air to the auditory nerve?
1. Sound is funneled by the outer ear into the ear canal in which frequencies are amplified
2. The sound waves vibrate the tympanic membrane (ear drum) and vibrate the ossicles (bones of the middle ear)
3. The stapes beats on the oval window which vibrates the fluid in the inner ear
4. The fluid moves along the basilar membrane (depending on the freq.) which stimulates the hair cells
5. Bending the hair cells causes an electrical signal to be initiated
6. This electrical signal is sent to the brain by CN 8 which turns it into a sound
