I can be found in the corner or edge of a map. I tell you what direction to go.
What is the compass rose?
My lines go laterally across the earth. They go from left to right. When you read coordinates, I am the first number.
What is latitude?
This is the four cardinal directions.
What is North, South, East and West?
CHECK THE MAP: I am red with the letter A. We live in this continent.
What is North America?
I explain what colors and symbols mean on a map.
What is the map legend or map key?
My lines go up and down. When you read coordinates, I am the second number.
What is longitude?
This is the four intermediate directions.
What is Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast?
CHECK THE MAP: I am blue with the letter D. I am the largest of the seven continents.
What is Asia?
I am used to show you the relationship between the distance on a map and the distance in real life.
What is scale?
When given the coordinates 40 N, 30 W - I have to use this type of line to find 40 N.
What is latitude?
CHECK THE MAP: If I am in Africa and I want to go to South America, what cardinal direction would I go?
What is West?
CHECK THE MAP: I am an ocean labeled #1. I am the largest of the 5 oceans.
What is the Pacific Ocean?
This map is a 3D version of a physical map. This map uses modeling to show which land is raised.
What is a relief map?
I am in the middle of the earth. I go straight across the middle like a horizontal line. I separate the earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. I am 0 degress latitude.
What is the Equator?
CHECK THE MAP: If I am in North America and I want to go to Antarctica, what cardinal direction would I go?
What is South?
CHECK THE MAP: I am the ocean labeled #5. I'm right next to Antarctica and I became the fifth ocean in the year 2000.
What is the Southern Ocean?
This map does not show topographic features like mountains and rivers. This map focus on the boundaries of a place. For example, this map of the United States would show just the states and maybe the state capitals.
What is a political map?
I go straight down the middle of the map and separate the Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres. I am 0 degrees longitude.
What is the Prime Meridian?
CHECK THE MAP: If I am in Australia and I want to go to North America, what INTERMEDIATE DIRECTION would I go?
What is Northwest?
CHECK THE MAP: I am the ocean labeled #4. I am between Asia, Africa and Australia.
