Is this weather or climate?

"John left the house without an umbrella. BY the time he got to work, he was wet from the rain!"

this is weather because it's talking about the conditions of the atmosphere at that specific time (aka, it was "raining"

100

the water cycle has four parts... they are:

evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection

100

Describe collection

Collection occurs once precipitation falls to the earths surface. The water that runs off mountains, hills, etc. and collects back into bodies of water.

100

the hotter the temperature the ______ the molecule speed!

faster!

100

An anemometer measures....

A thermometer measures...

windspeed

temperature

200

Weather measures these four things:

Temperature, Cloud Coverage, Wind Speed, Precipitation

200

Is this an example of E, P, C, or C?

"I left my glass of water outside yesterday and when I came back, there was less water in the glass"

Evaporation because the water was heated by the sun and evaporated (turned from liquid to gas)

200

Today's forecast is: 30ºF, cloudy, 7 mph wind speed

What precipitation will fall?

Snow because it's colder than 32ºF and we know that snow happens when temperatures DECREASE BELOW 32F!!!!!!!!!

200

This blocks the flow of heat energy, it doesn't let heat energy in OR out!

An insulator

Is this statement describing weather or climate?

"I've lived in Arizona for 50 years! Most days are sunny and on average, teh temperature is around 75"F"

Climate because in the text it says they have lived there for 50 years, which is a long time. They said that Arizona is sunny and usually 75ºF. That is describing weather over a long period of time

300

If I say the weather is cold and cloudy today, what two factors of weather am I describing?

temperature and cloud coverage

300

Describe evaporation

Evaporation is the process in which heat energy from the sun warms the surface of a body of water, heating the water molecules and creating water vapor which begins traveling up into the atmosphere.

300

Today's forecast is: 39ºF, sunny, 1 mph wind speed

What precipitation will fall?

None, there must be cloud coverage in order for precipitation to occur

300

This allows for the flow of heat energy, it allows heat energy in OR out!

A conductor

300

Here's the weather forecast for tomorrow:

40º, partly cloudy, 50 MPH wind speed.

What kind of precipitation will fall?

Rain

400

The difference between weather and climate is:

Weather measures the conditions in a specific location at a specific time; climate measures the weather conditions of an area over time

400

Describe condensation

Condensation occurs after evaporation. Once the water vapor (gas) reaches the atmosphere, it begins to condense due to the cold temperatures and turn into water droplets (liquid). When enough water droplets collect, clouds form.

400

Does this statement describe E, P, C, or C?

"In the summer, I can see tiny droplets of water form on the outside of my glass"

This is condensation, it is the process in which gas molecules (water vapor in the air) hit a cold surface (glass) and condense (turn from gas to liquid) forming droplets of water!

400

A container with MORE surface area will melt ____ and cool _____.

(fast or slow)?

FAST! A large surface area allows more heat energy to flow in or out - meaning it can cool (allow more heat energy out) and melt (allow more heat energy in) faster!

400

The temperature in Ms. Exley's mug has been measured for the past 4 hours.

1 hour: 50ºC, 2 hours 51ºC, 3 hours: 48ºC, 4 hours: 49ºC

What is the average temperature in her mug?

anywhere from 48-51ºC is an acceptable answer.

500

Is this statement an example of weather or climate?

"Today in New Jersey it's 30ºF, cloudy, and snowy"

Weather

500

Describe precipitation and its relationship to temperature

Precipitation occurs once clouds release water after becoming too heavy in the form of rain, sleet, snow or hail. If the temperature is above 32ºF, the freezing point of water, precipitation will fall as rain. If the temperature is below 32ºF, precipitation will fall as snow, sleet, or hail.

500

Describe the movement of a water molecule through the entire water cycle.

Let's hear it !

500

Which body of water will experience more evaporation? A puddle or a lake?

A lake because it has a larger surface area! That means that MORE heat energy can reach the surface of the water. Heat energy is what causes evaporation !

500

What is Ms. Exley's favorite candy?

Peanut M&Ms
