Where did Mr. Radley pull his meteorological statistics from?
Mr. Radley gathered this information from the Rosetta Stone.
How many red marks did Scout find on her after the fight?
Scout found seven or eight red marks on her while checking in her room after the fight.
Whose side does Uncle Jack immediately take when he breaks up the fight?
Uncle Jack immediately takes the side of Francis.
How do you think Atticus felt about Scout being a tomboy? Explain.
After Scout got into the fight, Atticus conversed with her about her actions. Afterwards, we were able to learn something about Atticus himself. I think Atticus felt indifferent about Scout as a tomboy. Ever since she was a kid, Scout enjoyed playing outside with her brother and participating in activities that were usually prone to boys. However, even through his lawyer cases, he believes everyone is equal no matter what. He does not judge by personality, but rather by respect. I think he wants Scout to feel comfortable in her own skin, specifically around her own family.
What kind of person are you early in the morning? Explain.
Personally, I am not fond of early mornings. Early in the morning I am a mostly miserable person. If I would have been awaken like Scout was for the fire, I would have felt truly infuriated. When I wake up early in the morning, the air is so cold and I just want to stay hidden in the covers all day. With the situation the Finch's neighborhood was in, I would have been like those that were in nearly their undergarments. I am so groggy in the morning that it feels impossible to get myself dressed into school clothes. The tiredness after waking up early in the morning does not go away fast enough. Taking that step to actually get out of bed in the morning, especially an early morning, is probably the hardest part of my day. I applaud the neighbors that were able to get up and immediately help Miss Maudie despite how early it was.
How do you think Scout felt when she found out that Boo Radley was the one to put the blanket on her?
I think Scout was overwhelmed with shock when she found out that Boo Radley had put the blanket on her out in the cold. For all of her life, she had been scared and skeptical about him, but from a distance. This event caught her off guard as she was unaware that he had any knowledge of her existence.
Who is Rose Aylmer in the novel?
Rose Aylmer is Uncle Jack's cat.
What was the name of the client Atticus was defending?
Atticus was defending Tom Robinson.
Why do you think Atticus told Scout not to say the n-word?
When Scout was talking to Atticus in the confinement of their home, she was explaining a situation to her father. I think Atticus told Scout not to say the n-word out of respect for the black people in their community. Everyone else in their town is racist and he was trying to lead by example and prevent his daughter from growing up to be racist. He stood firm in his morals and encouraged his children to do so as well.
Have you ever been sent to your room because you were in trouble? If yes, what was it like waiting for the consequences to come. If no, what do you think it would feel like?
I have been sent to my room for being in trouble twice throughout my childhood. While these numbers may appear slim, they felt like they were never-ending. As a kid, I was a rule follower, fitting nearly every definition of a goody two-shoes. With this nature, I found no enjoyment or pride in getting in trouble. I was similar to Scout in her response towards punishment. After getting scolded for calling her cousin rude names, she does not speak for the entire car ride home nor when Uncle Jack comes up to her room. I can relate to this because when my parents would come up after a substantial punishment, I would shut down and not talk to them. I felt alone and unheard in these moments, just like Scout did with her Uncle Jack. He had not listened to her side of the story and I often felt like my parents favorited my sisters' side of the story over mine. However, at the end of the day, both Scout and I found peace with the punisher.
What is your favorite memory from a snowstorm? Why?
My favorite memory from a snowstorm happened 4 years ago. My sisters were in older grades and thus had much more work to do on a daily basis. We had gotten the call that school was going to be cancelled the previous evening. That was a sign that we were going to get lots of snow. I awoke the next morning and the entire ground was covered with extra piled on top. I went downstairs and my sisters were standing in the kitchen talking to our neighbors. They did not have a generator so they told us they would be spending the day with us for fear of getting hypothermia. Though they were used to the cold, they could relate to Scout and Jem because they did not have all the correct supplies to keep them warm. That day we had a snowman making competition, but unlike Jem we did not use dirt to assemble ours. While the snow was truly wonderful, it was more the time I got to spend with my sisters and neighbors that made this day so special. For Scout, her snow day served as an entire day to spend with Jem, something she found very enjoyable.
Why did Atticus want Scout to hear everything he was telling Uncle Jack?
Atticus wanted Scout to hear everything he was telling Uncle Jack so that she could be mindful when facing difficult situations. When a boy at school was mocking her for what her dad was defending, Scout was able to remind herself of what her dad had said. Though it was not easy, I think Atticus wants her to implement the same morals when going through his trial. He does not want her to follow in the racist footsteps of the rest of the neighborhood. Standing in that kitchen, he hopes to make his reason for fighting this case clear without giving direct orders to Scout.
What type of tree did Jem use to make the snowman bones?
Why do you think Jem started telling Atticus everything that happened with Boo Radley?
I think Jem felt overburdened with pressure, and it hit him while he was standing next to his father. He could no longer carry the weight of the secrets that he kept inside. He was frightened by the situation with Mr. Radley because it was full of the unknown and mystery. Atticus was also a caring father, and his children recognized that. Jem telling his dad everything that night was his way of displaying appreciation and care.
Have you ever been in a situation where you just had to walk away? If yes, explain. If no, how difficult would that be for you?
I get into fights with my brother frequently. He likes to make unnecessary comments to me which make me really mad. I always have to try very hard to just walk away like Scout had to do. She was struggling to let it go and just leave the situation. I know how that feels. There are moments when it is really challenging, but I try my best to ignore him and not let his words get under my skin. Humans are born with a protective nature, both for themselves and others. Atticus was being talked poorly about, and that made Scout upset. It is difficult to ignore my brother when he is making comments about me, but it is even harder when you want to define a loved one that is being spoken of untruthfully.
