What are some symptoms of anxiety?

Feeling agitated, restless, trouble sleeping, worrying about past, present and future, trouble concentrating, withdrawing, avoiding things that make you anxious.

What are some emotional changes you might see with depression?

  • Feelings of sadness, which can include crying spells for no apparent reason
  • Frustration or feelings of anger, even over small matters, irritable
  • Feeling hopeless or empty, self-blame
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities

Good stress is short-term, positive response to a challenge that motivates you to reach a goal, leaving you feeling excited.  

Bad stress leaves you fearful or overwhelmed and in distress.

What are some benefits of social media?

Social media lets teens create online identities, express themselves, chat with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teens with support from other people who have similar hobbies or experiences in common.  It can help with connection, connect to others who may be going through something similar, support and reduce feeling lonely.

What are factors that increase the risk for suicide attempts or suicide?

  • Mental health conditions: Depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses are strongly linked to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Adverse experiences: Stressful life events, including bullying, recent loss (like a parent's death), abuse, and family violence, are significant risk factors. Social factors: Isolation, lack of family or peer support, and family history of suicide or mental illness increase risk.

  • Tiredness and loss of energy, sleeping to much or not sleeping

  • Frequent complaints of unexplained body aches and headaches, which may include frequent visits to the school nurse

What are some risks of social media for teens?

  • Distract from homework, exercise and family activities, Disrupt sleep.  Lead to information that is biased or not correct. rumors spread or share too much personal information and lead to unrealistic body image. Expose some teens to online predators, who might try to exploit or extort them. Expose some teens to cyberbullying, increase risk of anxiety or depression.

What are some warning signs that someone may be at risk for suicide?

  • Emotional: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, or withdrawal from friends and family.
  • Behavioral: Increased substance use, risky behavior, giving away possessions, or changes in eating or sleeping habits. Verbal: Talking or writing about death, suicide, or feeling like a burden. Online: Sharing social media posts that suggest hopelessness, loneliness, or saying goodbye.

Ways to help manage anxiety at home/self-care

  • get regular physical activity
  • eat well
  • reduce their caffeine intake
  • avoid smoking, vaping and alcohol
  • get enough sleep
  • reduce their stress levels through mindfulness, meditation or relaxation

Do not post when you are angry or upset we don't make good decisions when upset.  Do not post any personal information, make sure your GPS is off on your phone, Do not post a picture of share anything you would not feel comfortable with everyone seeing or knowing, keep your friends online in online world do no meet in person and use a nickname different from you online screen name.

What should you do if you think a friend or someone you know is thinking of suicide or harming themselves. 

First ask them assertively:  Are you thinking of committing suicide or hurting yours?  If yes, don't leave the alone, keep them safe, help them reach out to 911 and their family (someone they trust).  Follow up with them after they receive the help they need.

When should you seek help?

When Depressed mood and symptoms are more days of the week then not and when the symptoms persists for more than two weeks and you are concerned for your teens safety.  If you are concerned a friend may be depressed talk to an adult.

  • Exercise, Relaxation techniques (e.g., yoga, meditation)
  • Social support, getting enough sleep
  • Time management, talking to parents and supports
  • Seeking professional help if stress becomes overwhelming or interferes with daily functioning

What is cyber bullying?  What should you do about it?

Cyberbullying refers to cruel or bullying messages sent to you online. These might be from former friends or other people you know.  Ignore cyber bullies do not respond to them, if you ignore it they usually stop.  If they do not stop talk to your parents so they are aware of what is happening.  If it persists contact the police as cyber bullying which is  harassment is illegal.
