Yes! As long as the Member's participation could not be reasonably understood by the community as being identified with the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

Also: A member must contact the AmeriCorps Field Office and get its permission, before they engage in any rallies/demonstrations.

Are VISTA Members employees?

No! A member is not an employee of the sponsoring organization, nor of the host site if serving with an intermediary organization. A member is also not an employee of AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, or the federal government, except for very specific purposes. A member is a federal resource to a local organization.

Can a VISTA Member be active in a political party?

Yes! Members may join and be an active member of a political party or club as long as it is not during work hours and they are not representing AmeriCorps.

Do you still have to pay your students loans while serving in AmeriCorps?

Individuals in approved AmeriCorps positions are eligible for forbearance for most federally-guaranteed student loans. In addition, interest payments that accrue during service may be eligible for repayment by AmeriCorps.

Originally founded in 2008 as Maryland Campus Compact (MDCC), Transform Mid-Atlantic rebranded in 2022 to become what it is today.

Are VISTA Members allowed to have Nonprofessional relationships with anyone associated with their project?

No! Intimate/sexual relationships • Borrowing or lending money, automobiles, or other personal property • Engaging in financial or business dealings, or acting as an agent or sponsor with any commercial services • Allowing services to be performed (compensated or uncompensated) that have no reasonable connection with AmeriCorps VISTA activities • Gambling for goods, services, or money • Any activity and/or relationship that, in the judgment of the AmeriCorps Senior Portfolio Manager, may be reasonably perceived to undermine discipline, good order, and/or morale • Socializing that might lead to the perception of a relationship or overtures to activities listed above

Can a VISTA Member be assigned to a project where their family members holds a position of authority?

No! A member cannot be placed or assigned to a project site if the member is: in the immediate family (e.g., spouse, domestic partner, parent or guardian whether by blood or adoption, child whether by blood or adoption) of a staff member involved in the management or operation of the project or project Site, or of a AmeriCorps staff member in the applicable Field Office who makes decisions or takes actions regarding the project or the Site.

What was AmeriCorps's predecessor? 

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) created by FDR during the Great Depression led to the creation of the GI Bill with allowed millions of young people serve terms of 6 to 18 months to help restore the nations' parks, revitalize the economy, and support their families and themselves. The GI Bill links service and education, offering Americans educational opportunity in return for service to their country.
