Given 9 balls all of which weigh the same except for one, what is the minimum of weighings necessary to find the ball that weighs more (or less)?

Theoretically you should be able to do this in two weighings, so long as its a two-pan balance. Firstly, take two pairs of three balls and weigh them first. If they balance, you know the "odd" ball is in the last three balls. From that group take two balls and weigh them against each other. Again if they balance it the last one remaining. If however, the first six balls don't balance grab the set that is lighter or heavier (depending on criteria). In this case, repeat the second step above.

You're at the end of a quest and you approach two doors, and your treasure is behind one of two doors. Behind the other door is a slow, painful death.

Beside the doors, there are two people. Both of them know which door has the treasure and both know which door has the slow, painful death. One always tells the truth and one always lies.

What question do you ask, and which person do you ask, and what do you do based on what they respond?

Ask either one, “Which door would the other guy say is the correct one?”

By asking this question to the truthteller, you will get the incorrect door, because he will honestly say what the liar would say.

If you ask the liar, you will get the incorrect door, because he will lie about what the truthteller would tell you- the correct door.

By asking either guy, you will get the incorrect door, and you thereby select the correct door.
