Define Viscosity in your own words!

Viscosity: The property describing the thickness of a fluid!

100

Define Density in your own words!

Density: Physical Property of matter that describes how compact the particles of a substance are!

100

Define Compression

What is a squeezing force?

100

What is a controlled variable?

In a scientific experiment, controlled variables are the ones that WE DO NOT CHANGE!

- They're kept the same to assure the accuracy of our experiment!

How many countries are in the world?

What are 195 countries:

- 193 countries in the UN and 2 that aren't (the Holy see & the State of Palestine)

200

Name the main factor(s) that affect the viscosity of a substance.

What is temperature?

-> As temperature increases, the viscosity decreases (the substance gets thinner). -> As temperature decreases, the viscosity increases (the substance gets thicker),

200

What is the formula used to calculate density?

*** INCLUDE UNITS IN YOUR ANSWER***

What is: Density (g/mL)  = Mass (g) ÷ Volume (mL)

200

Define Pressure & give us the formula to calculate it!

Pressure: The measure of the acting force per unit area

Pressure  = Force ÷ Area

200

In an experiment, the variables THAT WE CHANGE are called what?

We change these variables across tests which lets us see what potential effects the variable can have on the experiment!

What is a manipulated variable?

200

What three movies were the top-grossing movies in 2021?

What are:

1. Spider-Man: No Way Home

2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

3. Venom: Let There be Carnage

300

Does temperature affect the viscosity of liquids & gasses in the same way?

No, they aren't affected in the same way:

1. Liquids decrease in viscosity (get thinner) as temperature increases

2. Liquids increase in viscosity (get thicker) as temperature decreases

We'll learn about gasses in higher grades!

300

Order the three states of matter in order of MOST dense to LEAST dense.

What is:

Most Dense: Solid

Middle: Liquid

Least Dense: Gas

300

What units are used to express Pressure, Force & Area?

what are:

Force: Newtons (N)

Pressure: Pascals/Kilopascals (Pa/KPa)

Area: Centimeters/Meters Sqaured (cm2/m2)

300

What is a responding variable?

In an experiment, the responding variables are the ones that change because of our manipulated variables. RV’s change is dependent on the MV’s used in our experiment.

Who won the NBA championship in 2019?

WHO ARE THE TORONTO RAPTORS BABY

400

If we drop a marble into a glass of milk and a glass of honey, what will happen to the marble (in terms of sinking/floating)?

*****YOU NEED TO USE THE WORD VISCOUS IN YOUR ANSWER*****

Milk is thinner than Honey (aka less viscous), the marble will fall through the less viscous liquid faster! So, the marble would fall through the milk much faster than the honey!

Which of these substances is the least dense? (put your answer into g/mL):

A. Mass = 75 g & Volume = 1.01L

B. Mass = 250 g & Volume = 1210mL

A. (75 g ÷ (1.01 L x 1000 mL)) -> 75 g ÷ 1010 mL

Density (A) = 0.074 g/mL

B. (250 g ÷ 1210 mL) -> Density (B) = 0.206 -> 0.21 g/mL

So substance A is the least dense

400

Can all fluids (liquids & gases) be compressed in the same way?

No! gases have large spaces between their particles which allows the space between the particles to be compressed, letting us compress gases a lot.

Liquids however have much less space between their particles than gases. They can be compressed to a small degree, but we say they are basically incompressible!

Identify the Variables in this experiment:

An experiment where we are testing green mold growth on wonderbread in different temperatures.

CV: Type of mold (green) & type of bread (wonderbread)

MV: Temperature used to grow mold

RV: Amount & type of mold growth (how much & where did the mold end up growing)

Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the __________ and I'll be the_________
It's a _______ ________ _______ ______ _____ ______

Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"

These four fluids have the following flow rates (cm/s):

Water: 17.45 cm/s Shampoo: 0.68 cm/s Honey: 1.17 cm/s Alcohol: 12.54 cm/s

Which fluid is most viscous? the least viscous? (HINT * whats the relationship between viscosity & flow rate)

Most Viscous: Shampoo due to it having the slowest flow rate

Least Viscous: Water due to it having the fastest flow rate

The relationship between viscosity & flow rate:

-> high viscosity = low flow rate

-> low viscosity = high flow rate

If I want an object to float on water (which has a density of 1.00 g/mL), what density does the object have to be?

-> What if I want the object to sink

To float: the object needs to be less dense than water, so anything less than 1.00 g/mL

To sink: the object needs to be denser than water, so anything more than 1.00 g/mL

 Calculate the pressure (Pa) produced by a force of 400 N acting on an area of 2.0 m2.

Pressure = Force ÷ Area

Force = 400 N & Area = 2.0 m2

Pressure = 400 N ÷ 2.0 m2 -> 200 Pa

200 Pascals of pressure are produced.

Identify the variables in this experiment:

We are making boats made of pop cans, clay & popsicle sticks. Our goal is to make the fastest boat, and a student suggests a square boat will move slower than a round boat.

CV: Materials -> Amount & type of Clay, Pop Can & popsicle sticks

MV: Shape of the boat (round vs. square)

RV:  Speed of the boat (which one moves through water slower?)
