300

What was different about Israel's leaders compared to the nations around them?

Israel's leaders were under the same law as the rest of the people.

What is the purpose of the Ark of the Covenant?

What is the purpose of the Tabernacle?

Ark of the Covenant: it is a place where the tablets of the 10 Commandments were to be stored, it also had the Mercy Seat of God (his throne).

Tabernacle: It was a holy place that the Israelites created so that the holy presence of God could dwell with them.

400

There were a few different ways that an Israelite could become impure (touching reproductive body fluids, touching mold/fungus, having a skin disease, or touching a dead body). What was the common theme in each of these things and how did they make someone "impure".

All of them symbolized a loss of life. This made someone impure and unable to enter into the presence of God because God is life itself- death is the opposite of God.

400

What is the sin that disqualifies the Exodus generation from getting to enter the promised land?

After Moses sends 12 spies to look at the land of Paran, the people become afraid and lose faith. They start planning a mutiny so that they can go back to Egypt. Because of their lack of faith, and how quickly they were willing to return to enslavement and join with people who worshipped other gods, YHWH says that this generation won't be allowed to enter the promised land.

400

Why is it so important that Israel stay faithful to their covenant with God?

Many reasons: they made a promise to the Lord

-they were supposed to be an example to the rest of the world of the wisdom and justice of God

-if they obeyed then God would bless them, but if they disobeyed then they would face consequences

500

In the story of Joseph, he says that he cannot have relations with Potiphar's wife because it would be a sin against God. What was the lesson that Ms. Quinn wanted us to learn from this?

(loving ________ and loving _______ are completely intertwined, you cannot separate the two)

Loving your neighbor and loving God are completely intertwined, you cannot separate the two.

You cannot truly love God without loving your neighbor, and you cannot truly love your neighbor without loving God.

500

On the last day of quarter 1, Ms. Quinn talked about how the books of Genesis and Exodus are linked. There is some common theme between the beginning of Genesis, and the ending of Exodus. What is the common theme?

In Genesis 1, we read of the creation story. God is creating a space for humans to live and be with him.

At the end of Exodus, humans have built the tabernacle, so that God is able to live and be with humans.

500

What was the purpose of all of the laws that are laid out in the book of Leviticus?

These laws are focused on Israel's ritual and moral purity. They are supposed to be pure and holy so that they can continue to live in the presence of God. God wants to be near his people, so they must be holy just like he is holy.

500

What is the sin that ultimately keeps Moses from getting to enter the promised land?

The people are complaining about the water, and Moses grows frustrated. God tells Moses to speak to a rock and it will produce water, but Moses instead hits the rock two times. He dishonors God by disobeying him, and he puts himself in the place of God.

500

Is it helpful for us to compare our modern day lives and laws with the laws that God gave to ancient Israel? Why or why not?

In terms of moral laws (like the 10 commandments), we do still need to uphold these. They are for everyone. But the ritual laws were written to a people living in a completely different time and a different context. We do not need to apply all of these laws to our lives, but we should remember that the purpose of all of the laws was for God's people to be holy, and Christians are called to be holy as well.
