You’re giving a snowy tour in February when a prospective student asks, “Why does every person here look so sad?”

Sometimes exams don't go the way you hoped, but as Boilermakers we always bounce back! (or some other euphemism)

This building is the only still- standing building of the original 6 from when Purdue was founded

I didn't apply to the Honors College on my early application, can I still be in it for my freshman year?

Unfortunately since you already submitted your application, we can't guarantee anything. You would need to contact Honors about this year. There are opportunities to apply to start as a sophomore.

Your microphone stops working and you're all the way out by Slayter Hill. What do you do?

“I heard I can’t have a car on campus my first year and campus seems big. How easy will it be for me to get around?”

We have lots of ways to get around campus, and you won't be stranded without a car. There's multiple modes of transportation you can use.

This building is open 24/7 and has a quiet library

Will I be able to practice my religion on campus?

We have multiple different religious and cultural centers on campus. We also have an interfaith prayer room in Stewart that has mats, chairs, and accommodates anyone who wants to practice prayer, reflection, or meditation.

Your walking near Wiley and Tarkington when someone starts yelling at you and throwing food out their window at you. Nothing has hit you but everyone has noticed, what do you do?

Acknowledge them and move on

A student asks you, in front of their mortified parents, “Can I use my fake ID to get into the bars? Where do people party?”

Haha, I wouldn't know!

OR

Purdue is a dry campus, but we do have a great Chocolate shop for those who are over 21!

This building is where prospective students should go if they want to tour one of the residence halls

Cary Quadrangle- Alumni and Guest Center

A rather overzealous alum continually corrects you during your tour. How would you handle this?

I'd love to hear more about your experiences after the tour is over, I'm sure a lot has changed since you've been a student here!

300

You're about to leave the co-rec when you notice it has started storm while you were inside talking to your families. What should you do? (What do you tell families, who do you need to message, what are the next steps)

Message Amanda telling her you are in the Corec and ask for next steps. Wait for further instruction, but typically if it doesn't look like it will let up any time soon, you can answer any final questions and conclude the tour due to safety. You can tell families they are welcome to follow you back to the welcome center if they would like, but the tour is officially over. Make your way back to the WC once you feel safe.

A parent asks, “What do you hate about Purdue?” How would you respond?

There isn't too much to hate, I truly love it here!

OR

Something else to be honest but don't tear anything to shreds. (Ex: I wish they served pizza more often, study spaces can fill up during finals, etc.)

“With so many students here at Purdue, how will I not just be treated like a number?”

We have so many ways to get involved in Academics and school work outside of the classroom. This could include things like SI sessions, recitations, professor office hours, and more.

A mom that was showing you her cheer routine from when she was a Purdue Cheerleader falls and breaks her ankle and now can't get up. What do you do?

Call 911 if it's emergent, message Amanda, and communicate with the tour group

A student from New York City asks you, “It feels like we’re in the middle of literally nowhere. It’s gotta be so boring. Is there anything to do out here or is it literally just corn?” What would you say?

There is always something to do on campus! We have farmers markets, festivals, comedy shows, tons of clubs, and more. If you don't know how to get involved, you can always check boilerlink!

A mom comes up to you after your tour and asks “What resources does Purdue have for parents who are leaving their child for the first time?”

Purdue offers a Parent and Family Connections Program which has access to a private facebook group, neswlettters, and email updates. They can send an email to parents@purdue.edu email if they want.

Also college is a time for growth for the student and there are lots of resources for the student as well!

An unwanted group of visitors (such as frat pledges, protestors, current students, or Sister Cindy) joins your tour and wont leave. They're yelling and What do you do?

Ignore them if possible (if they are just there and not talking)

If they are being distracting or yelling the tour guide can ask them to leave (respectfully call them out)

If it is affecting the experience of guests, privately tell them leave. If they stay, then get to the next stop on tour and message todd and amanda about what's going on.
