What does TPR mean?

Total Physical Response

What method makes emphasis on learning grammatical rules in a set order, one after the other in a sequence?

The structural approach / Grammar translation method

Creating a confortable environment, having learners no mental blocks and being receptive

This good environment in the classroom can be created with a lot of material, classroom arrangement and music for relaxation.

The suggestopedia method

What method focuses on rote learning of words and deep analysis of written texts?

The grammar-translation method

It has a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for teaching and learning a topic: the focus is not only on content, and not only on language; each is interwoven even if the emphasis is greater on one or the other at given time. Using _______, students learn something new about the subject and at the same time improve the foreign language.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)

Some of the basic principles of this method are that in the classroom:

  • Language is used to learn as well as to communicate
  • It is the subject matter which determines the language needed to learn.
  • The 4Cs: Content, Communication, Culture and Cognition

CLIL Method

In this method:

There is an inductive approach to grammar (i.e. having learners find out rules through the presentation of adequate linguistic forms in the target language) . Grammar rules are avoided and there is emphasis on good pronunciation.

It was developed as a response to the Grammar-Translation method.

All teaching is done in the target language, grammar is taught inductively, there is a focus on speaking and listening, and only useful ‘everyday' language is taught.

It focus more in the use of the language and not only in the exposure of it.

The Direct Method

Define the term “method”

It refers to the general principles, pedagogy and management strategies used for classroom instruction.

In ________, a lesson or unit is designed to help learners to complete a task: for example; write a letter, make a reservation, plan a trip, collaborate to design something, or hold a meeting.

task-based learning (TBL)

In this method, the learning process was seen as a problem-solving activity in which the learner was the center of the classroom.

The teacher speaks as less as possible letting students talk more in the class

Teacher and students used color code charts

The Silent way method

*It is a kind of instructional sequence

*It is a three-step lesson plan and teaching approach that helps the student learn, understand and practice new vocabulary.

*The teacher presents the new vocabulary and explains the form of the language in a meaningful context.

*The students practise this new vocabulary through controlled activities such as worksheets or question and answer activities to check comprehension.

*The students use or produce what they have learned in a communicative activity such as a role-play, communication game, or question and answer session.

PPP (Presentation-Practice-Production)

the main idea of this method is that being that accelerated learning can take place when accompanied by de-suggestion of psychological barriers and positive suggestion. To this end lessons take place against a background of soothing music in an emotionally comforting environment, with the teacher actively planting and unplanting thoughts in and from the learners' minds.

Which method emphasizes the use of commands in class?

The total physical response method.

In this lesson the teacher doesn't pre-determine what language will be studied, the lesson is based around the completion of a central task and the language studied is determined by what happens as the students complete it.

Task-Based Learning (TBL)

This method opposed the Grammar-translation Method, teaching grammar was inductively and speech and listening comprehension were taught.

All teaching is done in the target language, grammar is taught inductively, there is a focus on speaking and listening, and only useful ‘everyday' language is taught.

The direct method

First, the teacher presents the present perfect. Next, the students try using it in structured exercises. Finally, the students try to have a conversation together using the present perfect.

PPP (Presentation - Practice - Production)

In these lessons (Method) students solve a task that involves an authentic use of language, rather than completing simple language questions about grammar or vocabulary.

TBL (Task Based Learning Method)

What is the purpose of the teacher saying as little as possible in class?

So that the learner can be in control of what he/she wants to say.

*This method/approach makes emphasis on no making correction of mistakes.

*It is suitable for beginners.

*There is an emphasis on exposure of the language rather than practice of the language.

*The teacher motivates students to talk and produce the language but doesn't force them to do so.

*One of its objectives is to help beginners become intermediate.

The Natural Approach

It is a method of language teaching developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It aims to foster naturalistic language acquisition in a classroom setting, and to this end it emphasises communication, and places decreased importance on conscious grammar study and explicit correction of student errors.

It is based on Krashen's theory of second language acquisition

  • the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis,
  • the Monitor hypothesis,
  • the Input hypothesis,
  • the Affective Filter hypothesis,
  • and the Natural Order hypothesis.

The Natural Approach

The ___________ is a way of analysing and teaching language based on the idea that it is made up of lexical units rather than grammatical structures. The units are words, chunks formed by collocations, and fixed phrases

Lexical Approach

What language method implies learning and acquiring habits?

The audio-lingual method

Explain the approach's objective in the Community language learning method

Building strong personal links between the teacher and student so that there are no blocks to learning.

What method teaches words in broadly the order of their frequency, and great emphasis is placed on the use of authentic materials?

The lexical syllabus method

Name and explain two of the four Cs involved in the CLIL method

· Content: enabling progress in the knowledge, skills and understanding of the specific issues of a particular curriculum.
· Communication: using language to learn while learning to use language itself.
· Cognition: developing thinking skills which link concept formation, knowledge and language.
· Culture: allowing exposure to diverse perspectives and shared knowledge that make us more aware the others and oneself.
