TRIO is not an acronym; however it was created as a result of the 3 original programs, Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services.
TRIO is a set of federally-funded college–based educational opportunity outreach programs that motivate and support students from low-income backgrounds – including military veterans and students with disabilities. Currently serving more than 870,000 students from middle school through post-graduate study, TRIO provides academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary to promote college access, retention, and graduation. TRIO students come from families that earn less than $38,000 a year and/or in which neither parent have earned a college degree.

How did the TRIO program begin
The Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 established Upward Bound. Under the Higher Education Act of 1965, Talent Search was created. In 1968, the Special Services for Disadvantaged Students (now know as Student Support Services) was launched. This was then called the "TRIO" of federally-funded programs.
