The Story Behind the Day

  • The new shirt: In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad went to St. Joseph Mission Residential School in British Columbia. Her grandmother bought her a bright new orange shirt for her first day.
  • Confiscation: School officials took the orange shirt away from her upon arrival.
  • The movement: Her painful experience inspired Orange Shirt Day, which began in Williams Lake, BC, in 2013 to honor residential school survivors and remember the children who did not return home.
