However they could not gather enough fighting forces, so to spread the word Lưu Bá Ôn urged people to buy mooncakes for the Chinese New Year. In the cakes the was a hidden note inside saying "August 15th night of the uprising" (đêm 15 tháng 8 khởi nghĩa). They gathered and overthrew the Nguyên dynasty. Ever since then it has become an indispensable part of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Woodcutter Cuội found a magic "reincarnation of birth" tree. He saved many lives. A rich man asked Cuội to save his daughter who had just drowned, and then the rich man asked Cuội to be his daughter's husband. Enemies passed by his house and killed his wife removing her intestines so she could not be revived. The dog then offered his intestines so the wife could be revived. She was revived and then Cuội name intestine out of clay to revive the dog.
However, the wife was not the same after that. she was very forgetful. Cuội told his wife to pee in the west for if she doesn't the tree with grow immensely. She forgets and when Cuội gets home the tree had stored up to the sky and when Cuội tried to pull the tree down it grew to the moon with him on it.

He also could not go to Hell because he used to play with the demons. Jack had saved his devil friend from being captured, so the devil promised he would never capture his soul for hell. When he died, the devil gave Jack a Pumpkin with hellfire inside to guide his way back to Earth.
