What is the definition of Forming?

 Forming is the very first stage of a group, in which the members of the group are meeting for the first time, getting acquainted, and looking to find ground footing for the operations of the group. In this stage, group members do not yet see themselves as part of a group, but rather as individuals who were brought together to achieve a certain goal. Everything is up in the air; structure, purpose, and group roles. There is no established group identity, member interactions come from a place of individuality and independence.

The adjourning stage is the final stage of group development when a group ends its work and disbands. It occurs when a group’s goals are met, and the members move on to other projects or roles

What happens in the forming stage? 

Members are questioning, socializing, and getting to know one another, focusing on the overall group goal or purpose, while keeping interactions surface level. Everyone is on their best behavior; putting their best foot forward. Group composition, group objectives, member responsibilities, and member roles are all uncertain. Member communication is often limited, lacking, and stunted in this phase.

What happens in the storming stage?

 This stage is where members push their boundaries and challenge initial assumptions about group roles, direction, and processes. This involves working through disagreements and learning to communicate effectively in the face of conflict.

What happens in the norming stage?

This stage is where the group starts to function as a team, with members working together, resolving differences, and focusing on shared goals. As the group develops cohesion, leadership changes from 'one' teammate in charge to shared leadership.

Members effectively produce as a team, with an interdependence of members accomplishing tasks.

This stage happens when a workgroup is transitioning to no longer working together. The assigned work for the group is close to being completed as their goals and objectives have been met, after which the members of the group will move on to other work assignments outside of the group.

Team members must provide clear expectations, consistent instructions, and quick responses to other team members. A “team leader” must take the lead to drive the conversations and expectations.

You and your team members should recognize that change will happen in this stage. Ask and provide team and individual evaluations, and an opportunity for acknowledgments that need to be addressed.
