Jing-Mei and her mother both share the same goals. However, they do not understand what motivates the other and the sacrifices and pressures that burden each other. Jing-Mei feels like she can never live up to her mother's expectations and has low self-esteem as a result of the many failures to succeed at any of her mother's tests. The mother sacrifices a lot (working extra hard, emigrating to America to give her child a better life, etc) and feels as if Jing-Mei does not appreciate what she has done and is not trying.
