Tell me about how you were able to help a peer overcome a fear? What did you do to help support them?

Edgar in the dorm was worries about CFII, replaced fear with confidence by helping his ground knowledge with study walks and improved practical skill with desktop sims.

Dorm bro Jacob, throwing up at 3:00am, texted him if he's ok and if he needs anything. He was worried that he threw up a little blood so I drove him to ER at 4:00 am and got chocolate chip mint cookies out of it.

How would you deal with a student that consistently cancel their flights?

I would ask if their is anything affecting them outside of the academy that is impacting their ability to train and explain the importance of momentum in their training to be successful.

100

If you see a carbon monoxide warning, what would you do?

I would open the eyeballs vents and put the air conditioner on max, cold with recirculation off

100

What are the altitudes stated in FAR 91.119

Over congested - 1,000 feet above highest obstacle 2,000 lateral distance

Uncongested areas - 500 feet above highest structure

Anywhere - An altitude that would allow a safe landing if the power unit fails

200

What are the basic elements of communication and their barriers?

Source, Symbol, Receiver

Confusions between symbol and symbolized object

Overuse of abstractions

Interference

Lack of common experience

Tell me about a time that when you made a miscalculation in the aircraft that led to a bad situation. How did you handle it and what did you learn from it.

Flight to Pine Mountain Lake with my little brother, made a bad takeoff by not accounting for conditions (hot, high and heavy). Barely cleared terrain at Vx. Debriefed event with experienced pilots and learned to be a thinking pilot/problem solver. Went back the next day to redeem myself.

I was flying to a new airport and got lost in a Cessna 152. I climbed and circled to 10,500 and pulled the power back before I got two cross radials and rediscovered my position.

200

What would you do if you noticed another co-worker operating aircraft in violation of FAR's or company FOM?

I would privately pull them aside and ask if they are aware of violating the FAR/FOM. I would then advocate for them to adhere to the regulations to preserve the integrity and prestige of our academy.

200

If you see white smoke coming from the dash of the plane, what is that indicating?

Cabin Fire In Flight.

Turn off BAT 1, ALT 1 & 2 OFF
Fire Extinguisher ON

Avionics OFF

Please explain paragraph "B" of 91.13

You cannot operate an aircraft as careless or reckless in flight (Paragraph A) or while taxing on the airport surface (Paragraph B)
300

Describe a learning plateau and what you would do to help the student get out of the plateau.

Where progress stalls and to get out of it, I would take a break from it and focus on a more enjoyable skill and re-attack it from a more refreshed state.
300

Tell me about a time you positively impacted someones life?

I was a cadet orientation pilot in Civil Air Patrol and gave discovery flights to cadets from ages 12-18. It was very rewarding to have an enthusiastic cadet light up with the passion of aviation during the flight and ask how he can become a pilot afterwards.

I created a mentorship program to help cadets win aviation scholarships and pass the FAA written test.

300

Lets say you overhear a fellow instructor being inappropriate with a student, how would you approach the situation?

I would ask to speak to them privately and ask them if they realized how their interaction could be viewed as inappropriate and try to give them a heads up to knock it off for their own sake so they don't get in real trouble.

300

What buss powers the starter

Non-Essential power Bus

300

91.173 what must a pilot do to fly under IFR

File an IFR flight plan and receive an ATC clearance

400

What are some defense mechanisms a student may show before, during, or after a flight? How do you deal with it?

Rationalization - explain the objectiveness of the standards and exactly why something was not up to standards through examples in the flight.

Denial - emphasize the importance of the maneuver and why the way the performed it was not meeting the intent of the maneuver.

Compensation - Give credit for the maneuver performed well but pinpoint why the maneuver in question fell short.

400

What qualities make a good flight instructor?

Enthusiasm, subject matter expertise, patience and a positive attitude.

400

After a flight you realize that you violated company SOP's what would be your next step?

I would make it a teaching moment to my student of what not to do and show them in the FOM where I deviated from the rules and let QC know so they wouldn't be alarmed by cloudahoy.

400

The airspeed indicator uses what kind of pressure and from which port, to display airspeed information?

Dynamic pressure from the Pitot Tube and static pressure from the static port

400

What are class B and class G airspace minimums

Class B - 3 sm clear of clouds

Class G below 1,200 AGL day - 1 mile clear of clouds

Class G below 1,200 AGL night - 3 miles 1,000 above 500 below, 2,000 lateral

Class G above 1,200 AGL Day - 1 mile, 1,000 above, 500 below, 2,000 lateral

Class G above 1,200 AGL night - 3 mile, 1,000 above, 500 below, 2,000 lateral

Class G above 10,000 - 5 miles, 1,000 above, 1,000 below and 1 miles lateral
