How long does it take for the earth to make one rotation or spin?

24 hours

100

What are the four seasons?

spring, summer, fall, winter

100

what is elevation?

a measurement of height above sea level
100

About how much of the earth is ocean and how much is land?

2/3 or 70% or 75% is ocean. About 1/3 or 25% is land.

100

We find zero latitude________________

at the equator

200

We say the sun "rises". Does it really "rise"?

No, as the earth spins, the side that is not facing the sun changes places with the side that is.

200

What is the cause of seasons?

Tilt

200

Where can I find zero feet of elevation?

A beach that slopes into the sea

200

Why do deserts heat up and cool off more quickly than forests or oceans?

The type of matter land is made of heats up and cools off more quickly than water.

200

What latitude does the earth get the most direct sunlight at?

0 latitude at the equator

300

What is the cause of Day and Night? Can it be measured at longitude lines or latitude lines?

The earth's spinning and longitude lines.

300

What season is it in the Northern Hemisphere if the earth is tilting toward the sun?

Summer

300

Why do rain shadows happen on the ocean side of a mountain?

forces the air up where it is cold and the moisture in the air causes the  evaporated water to condensate. This makes clouds and when enough condensation has happened gravity pulls the water droplets to earth as rain and there is no water let to go over the top of the mountain.

300

What does the Gulf Stream do for Florida, the East Coast of the United States, and Europe?

Warms it up by bringing warm water from the equator?

300

What latitudes does the earth get the least direct sunlight?

North and South Pole

400

How many times in a year does the earth have a complete rotation of day and night?

365 1/4 that is why we have leap year

400

What is it called in the spring and fall when there are equal amounts of light and darkness or day and night.

Equinox

400

Will I be able to find shade under a large tree at high elevation? What happens to vegetation as you increase in elevation going up a mountain?

No, I won't be able to find shade under a tree. Vegetation decreases.

400

Warm water/air rises and cool air sinks over and over again as a way of spreading heat around the ocean or atmosphere? What type of heat transfer do we call this?

Convection Currents

400

The air gets "thinner" at high elevation. Why does this happen? Why is there less oxygen to breathe?

There is less pull from gravity

500

Why were times zones invented?

So human time would align with light and darkness in their area.

500

What is the first day of winter and the first day of summer called when it is either the longest or shortest day of the year?

Solstice

500

What causes the none-ocean side of a mountain to not get any rain?

Wind brings ocean breezes with moisture to the land and the mountain blocks it, and forces it to go up in the atmosphere where it gets cold and condensation begins which causes clouds. Then, when enough condensation has happened gravity will pull down the water droplets as rain or snow depending on temperature.

500

California stays mild ( not hot) in temperatures because of an ocean current from _________

Alaska and the north pole

500

How would I want to dress  if climbing Pike's Peak at 14, 0000? what happens to temperature as elevation increases?

warm, it decreases
