My best friend just completely walked past me at school. They must be mad at me.

That's unusual that my best friend would just walk past me like that. I am not sure why.

It's possible they didn't see me.

I will check-in and find out if everything is okay.

Everyone thinks I am stupid.

It feels like people are judging me, but I made a mistake, like every human being does.

I might be being really hard on myself. Even if even one person is thinking that, then that's pretty unkind of them.

This moment isn't going to matter to me in a year.

I had a panic attack the last time I took the train, I am definitely going to have one again and it'll be even worse.

The last time I took the train was really uncomfortable. But that does not guarantee that  I will have one again.

I've survived every panic attack I've ever had. If it happens I can handle it and it will pass.

This time I will be prepared to prevent the likelihood of a panic attack. I'll engage in deep breathing, listen to music, etc.

What is the adaptive purpose of anxiety? Why do we have/need this emotion?

Its purpose is to allow us to be ready to cope with potentially negative or dangerous events. It is future-oriented. It signals the need to reduce activity and refocus attention on possible sources of future threat or danger (assumedly for self-preservation purposes). When we feel anxious, our bodies and minds go into a state of vigilance and “preparation” so that we aren’t caught off guard if something bad happens.
