100

This organelle is the outer membrane that protects the cell.

Cell Membrane

100

This is the smallest unit of organization in a ecosystem.

An organism

100

What is the defining feature of a prokaryotic cell? Give one example

Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus. Bacteria

100

What is a Eukaryote?

An organism whose cells contain a nucleus.

100

What is bioengineering? Give an example of a product of bioengineering.

Applying engineering or technology to living systems. Pacemaker.

200

This is the powerhouse of the cell.

Mitochondria

200

This part of the earth system includes all the biotic and abiotic factors.

Ecosystem

200

Would you expect more nerve cells to be present in the skin or in the muscle? Why?

There is likely to be more nerve cells on the skin because the skin is more likely to need to send sensory information to the brain.

200

What is an abiotic factor? Give two examples.

Nonliving components of an ecosystem.

200

Humans undergo thermoregulation to maintain a constant body temperature. What would the stimulus be in the process of thermoregulation? What is a physiological response to the stimulus?

Hot weather --> sweating

300

This is an organelle that is unique to plants and stores water.

Vacuole

300

What is the difference between a community and a population?

Population = many of one species of organism

Community = multiple species of organisms

300

The cell walls of plant cells have openings or channels. How is this structure most likely related to the proper functioning of the plant system?

The plant may need to send nutrients and water between cells, so the channels allow these to pass through.

300

What is a stimulus?

An action that causes an imbalance in the internal conditions of the organism which results in a physiological response.

300

Producers gain their energy from the sunlight through photosynthesis. Where do consumers get their energy? If this amount of energy proportional (similar) to that gained by the producers?

Consumers get their energy from the producers. There is somewhat less energy gained from the consumers than the consumers gain from the sun.

400

This organelle finishes protein assembly, mainly for membrane bound proteins.

Rough ER
400

Which of the component of the biosphere connect all three?

Hydrosphere.

400

If a plant wilts, which organelle is likely involved in the shriveling? Why?

Vacuole.

400

What is cell differentiation?

The process by which unspecialized cells develop into their mature form and function.

400

What would happen on a hot summer day if your brain did not receive input that your body was starting to heat up?

You would not feel any effect at all.

500

This organelle carries out photosynthesis.

Chloroplast

500
What are the 5 characteristics of living things?

1. Made of cells

2. Growth/change over time

3. Require an energy source

4. Reproduce

5. Maintain homeostasis

500

Red blood cells carry oxygen to cells. To carry out their function, these cells must bind oxygen and travel through small blood vessels in the circulatory system called capillaries. Capillaries are so narrow that red blood cells must move through single file. How does the structure of a red blood cell allow them to carry out their function?

They are small and disc shaped, this allows them to fit through the circular channels inside a capillary

500
What is a tissue?

A group of cells that work together to perform a similar function.

500

The stomata (or stoma) in plants open and close to keep water loss under control and allow gas exchange in the plant. Would you expect a plant found in the desert to have many stoma?

No, to prevent water loss the plant would have fewer stoma.
