What is a scalar? Give an example
A quantity with only a magnitude (no direction). Ex: 400 calories
100
You walk in a straight line from your house to your friend's house who lives on the same street, 100m East of you. What is the distance that you traveled? Displacement? Draw a picture.
Distance = 100m Displacement = 100m East
100

Speed = Distance/Time Speed = 100m/20s Speed = 5 m/s
100
You run in a straight line in the North direction for 200 meters. It takes you 40 seconds to do this. What is your speed? What is your velocity? Show your work.
Speed = 5 m/s Velocity = 5 m/s North
100
You are going for a bike ride. It takes you 2 seconds to increase your speed from 0 m/s (at the start) to 10 m/s. What is your acceleration? Show your work.
Acceleration = 10m/s/2s = 5 m/s^2
200
What is a vector? Give an example
A quantity with both a magnitude and a direction. Ex: 5 m/s South

What is the difference between "distance" and "displacement?" Be complete -- I'm looking for the best answer!
Distance is the total amount of ground covered by an object, and is a scalar quantity. Displacement is the object's change in position, from starting point to ending point. It is a vector quantity. Distance usually has a greater magnitude than displacement.

It takes a car 20 seconds to travel 1000 meters. How fast, on average, was the car moving?
Speed = Distance/Time Speed = 1000m/20s Speed = 50 m/s
200
You run one time around a track that is 500 meters long, and it takes you only 100 seconds to do this. What was your average speed? Average velocity? Show your work.
Speed = 5 m/s Velocity = 0 m/s
200
You are stopped at a red light. When the light turns green, it takes you 4 seconds for your car to reach a speed of 20 m/s. What was the acceleration of your car? Show your work.
Acceleration = (20m/s) / 4s Acceleration = 5 m/s^2
300
45,000 km Is this quantity a scalar or a vector? EXPLAIN WHY
Scalar, because the quantity only has a magnitude (an amount), and no direction.
300
You run 4 times around a track that is 1/4 mile long. What is the total distance that you run? What is your total displacement? Draw a picture.
Distance = 1 mile Displacement = 0 miles
300
If a motorbike is moving at 30 m/s for 10 seconds, how far does it travel?
Speed = Distance/Time Distance = Speed x Time Distance = 30m/s x 10s = 300 meters

Jose runs from his house to the corner store which is located 30 meters West. He then runs back home. It takes him 20 seconds to complete this whole trip. What is his average speed? Velocity? Show your work.
Speed = 3 m/s Velocity = 0 m/s
300
Daniel is driving his Ferrari at 20 m/s, until he sees a red light up ahead. It takes him 5 seconds to come to a stop. What was his acceleration?
Acceleration = -4 m/s^2
400
-15.6 m/s^2 Is this quantity a scalar or a vector? Why?
Vector. There is a magnitude (15.6 m/s^2) and the "negative" symbol implies that the acceleration is occurring in the backward direction
400
Juana walks 300 meters West, then 200 meters East. What is her total distance traveled? Displacement? Draw a picture.
Distance = 500 m Displacement = 100 m West
