A student begins jogging, cellular respiration increases and more carbon dioxide enters their blood. Specialized cells in the blood vessels detect the increase in carbon dioxide and send signals to the brain. The brain processes this information and sends signals to the diaphragm (breathing muscles). These muscles begin contracting faster, increasing the student's breathing rate. As a result, more carbon dioxide is exhaled and the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood returns toward its normal level.
