The first step in the scientific method
Question (testable)
Name the 3 types of variables.
Independent, Dependent, Constant
How many independent variables are there in any given experiment?
1
What are the 2 types of observations?
Qualitative and Quantitative
Observation: Maria is not at school today
Possible inference:_________________
Maria is sick
Maria is at the dentist
Maria missed the bus
True or False
A testable question can be based on one's personal opinion.
False
What is an independent variable?
The one factor that is intentionally changed in an experiment.
Step 5 in the Scientific Method
Observe, record, and analyze date
What is a qualitative observation? Give an example.
Observations that do not use numbers in the description.
True or False
Your conclusion always matches your hypothesis?
False - sometimes your hypothesis is wrong
Step 2 of the Scientific Method
Collect Information/research
What is a dependent variable?
What is measured in an experiment. It is affected as a result of changing the independent variable.
Step 6 in the scientific method
Draw conclusions
What is a quantitative observation? Give an example.
Observations that involve a number in the form of an amount or measurement.
Qualitative or Quantitative?
Mark missed an easy question on the math test.
Qualitative
Step 3 in the Scientific Method
Hypothesis
What is a constant variable?
All the factors that must be kept the same in an experiment.
This is a special type of prediction that is a possible explanation for a set of observations or an answer to a scientific question.
Hypothesis
What is an inference?
A possible explanation to an observation.
What amount of sunlight makes tulips grow tallest?
IV -
DV-
CV-
IV = amount of sunlight
DV= growth of flower
CV= amount of water, soil, pot...
Step 4 in the Scientific Method
Experiment or test the hypothesis
What are the other names to independent and dependent variable?
Independent - manipulated
Dependent - responding
Identify the independent and dependent variables in the following experiment.
Which type of soda has more sugar: Brand X, Brand Y, or Brand Z.
Independent = type of soda
Dependent = amount of sugar
Tara wanted to find out which brand of popcorn results in the fewest unpopped kernels. She purchased 3 of the same size bag of different brands of microwave popcorn. She popped Brand A for 3 min. 30 sec., Brand B for 3 min 45 sec, and Brand C for 4 min. She poured each bag into a seperate bowl and counted how many unpopped kernels remained.
What did Tara do wrong?
Popped them at different times which makes 2 independent variables.
