In exploring the impact of economic problems on public opinion, scholarship has nearly exclusively focused on personal and national economic experiences. At present, little to no research analyzes the impact of economic distress within one’s social network on an individual’s attitudes. Drawing upon network and contact theories, it is argued that financial hardship experienced vicariously through one’s friends should influence an individual’s views about the political economy, and ultimately, their economic policy preferences, such as support for redistribution. Utilizing national survey data, this article demonstrates that having economically distressed friends heightens perceived class-based bias in the political system—namely, that the rich have undue influence over politics. Further, moderated regression analysis reveals that this effect depends upon the prevalence of political discussion within one’s friendship network. Finally, mediation analysis reveals that, by heightening perceived class-based bias, distress within one’s friendship network indirectly increases support for government efforts to redress Inequality

The flow of foreign direct investment into developing countries varies greatly across countries and over time. The political factors that affect these flows are not well understood. Focusing on the relationship between trade and investment, we argue that international trade agreements—GATT/WTO and preferential trade agreements (PTAs)—provide mechanisms for making commitments to foreign investors about the treatment of their assets, thus reassuring investors and increasing investment. These international commitments are more credible than domestic policy choices, because reneging on them is more costly. Statistical analyses for 122 developing countries from 1970 to 2000 support this argument. Developing countries that belong to the WTO and participate in more PTAs experience greater FDI inflows than otherwise, controlling for many factors including domestic policy preferences and taking into account possible endogeneity. Joining international trade agreements allows developing countries to attract more FDI and thus increase economic growth.

The primary school dropout rate in Bangladesh is very high. Both the government and NGOs have taken many initiatives to raise the quality of education and reduce the dropout rate. In this study we explore the impacts of supplementary tutoring provided to primary school students in different districts of Bangladesh. The goal of this programme is to reduce dropouts and to improve the class performance of the primary school students. We find that after-hour tutoring, offered to Grade 2 students, helped them to continue up to Grade 5. However, it did not exhibit any significant impact on test scores.

This report analyzes social impact bonds, a promising new approach to the government financing of social service programs or social “interventions.” By combining performance-based payments and market discipline, the approach has the potential to improve results, overcome barriers to social innovation, and encourage investment in cost-saving preventive services.

Do transnational human rights organizations (HROs) influence foreign military intervention onset? We argue that the greater international exposure of human suffering through HRO “naming and shaming” activities starts a process of mobilization and opinion change in the international community that ultimately increases the likelihood of humanitarian military intervention. This is a special corollary to the supposed “CNN Effect” in foreign policy; we argue that information from HROs can influence foreign policy decisions. We test the empirical implication of the argument on a sample of all non-Western countries from 1990 to 2005. The results suggest that HRO shaming makes humanitarian intervention more likely even after controlling for several other covariates of intervention decisions. HRO activities appear to have a significant impact on the likelihood of military missions by IGOs as well as interventions led by third-party states.

Hartford Magnet School (HMS) is a hypothetical 7th-12th grade public school with 600 students. Students must apply and are selected for limited slots via lottery. HMS is considering implementing a free laptop program, which the school believes would enhance not only students’ computer skills, but also their overall learning outcomes, including test scores on statewide achievement exams. Before implementing the program throughout the school, HMS wishes to conduct and evaluate a pilot free laptop program in the seventh grade, in which some individual seventh graders would receive laptops and others would not.

To what extent are the results of the randomized controlled experiment at HMS externally valid?
