The introduction of background information necessary for the reader or audience to make sense of a story.

A way the author shows us who the character is that uses behavior, speech, and appearance, as well as the opinions of other characters
What is indirect characterization?
language that stimulates the reader's senses, touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight
What is imagery?
A problem, antagonism, or struggle that takes place between a character and an outside force
What is an external conflict?
involves acknowledging standpoints that go against your argument
What is the counterclaim?
The central, deeper meaning of a written work
What is the theme?
The words a character says when they are thinking in their mind

Word choice, or the specific language an author, narrator, or speaker uses to describe events and interact with other characters
What is diction?
a character is set in opposition to nature. This can mean the weather, the wilderness, or a natural disaster.

A sequence of events that is secondary to the main plot in a narrative or drama, usually featuring supporting characters.
What is the subplot?
The point of highest tension in a story, in which the main conflict is faced and ultimately resolved.
