test to prove ability to read in order to vote
What is a literacy test?
white southerners who supported federal Reconstruction, supported the Republican Party
Who are scalawags?
government agency founded during Reconstruction to help former slaves
What is the Freedmen's Bureau?
amendment gave African American men the right to vote, increasing number of people eligible to vote, women still not allowed to vote
What is the 15th Amendment?
dividing the South into 5 military districts governed by Union troops was part of this Reconstruction Plan
What is Congressional/Radical Reconstruction?
a secret society created by white southerners in 1866 that used terror and violence to keep African Americans from exercising their civil rights
What is the Ku Klux Klan?
white northerners who moved to the South to profit off of freedmen, worked to place Republicans in power in the South
Who are carpetbaggers?
amendment defined all people born or naturalized within the United States as citizens, guaranteed citizens the equal protection of the laws, and said that states could not “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”

What are Jim Crow Laws?
1896 Supreme Court decision that legalized state-ordered segregation as long as the facilities for blacks and whites were equal
