100

This is the type of energy found in electrical wires.

electrostatic/electric/electical

100

What are some uses of electrostatic energy (electrical)?

heating a house, lighting a house, a clock, etc.

100

What's the name of this law"

"Energy can be stored or transferred but never created or destroyed."

The Law of Conservation of Energy
100

This is the name of a branch of science. It studies the behavior of the universe.

Physics

100

What's the smallest state in America?

Rhode Island

200

This is the type of energy stored in food.

chemical
200

Name TWO non-renewable sources of energy.

coal, oil, natural gas

200

What is thermal expansion?

This occurs when particles move faster in a substance and cause the substance to expand.

200

Name TWO forms of energy in a roller coaster.

kinetic, electrical, gravitational potential, heat, etc.

200

How many bones do sharks have?

0 (only cartilage)

300

This is the type of energy in an atomic bomb.

nuclear energy

300

Name THREE renewable energy sources.

wind, solar, biofuel, hydroelectric

300

Why do some substances heat up faster than others?

Some substances have a lower thermal capacity (EX) oil has a lower thermal capacity than water

300

Name an example of elastic potential energy.

rubber band, bouncy ball, trampoline, rubber ball, plunger, etc.
300

How was the 16th president of the United States?

Abraham Lincoln

400

This is the energy of movement. An example is a roller coaster traveling at top speed.

kinetic

400

How can radiation be used for practical purposes?

carbon dating, cancer treatment, radiology, irradiation (keep food from spoiling)

400

What's conduction?

It is the heat transfer in solids.

400

Explain why water can freeze or turn into a gas.

Because of thermal expansion, when water is heated up, its particles move faster and faster until the water expands and the particles turn into water vapor and rise due to convection. Water can freeze when it loses heat and the particles slow down so much that the water turns into a solid substance (ice).

400

In what movie will you find character who are looking for a brain, a heart, and courage?

The Wizard of Oz

500

This type of energy generates heat. An example is fire.

thermal

What is carbon dating?

It is a method of measuring how old a dead organism is. It occurs when scientists measure the ration of carbon 12 to carbon 14 in the dead organism. The carbon 14 is radioactive and therefore leaves the organism. In other words, it is measuring how much carbon 14 has left the decaying organism.

500

What is convection?

It is the process of heat transfer in liquids and gases.

500

In a lake there are pockets of cold and warmer water. Where would you generally find the colder pockets? Where would you generally find the warmer pockets? Why is this?

You would generally find the colder pockets lower/at the bottom of the lake and the warmer ones towards the surface of the water. This is because of convection. In a liquid warmer liquid rises while cooler liquid drops.
