Mummification is a special process that the ancient Egyptians used to preserve dead bodies. First, the embalmers would remove the brain by putting a hook through the nose. Then, they would make a cut on the left side of the body and take out all the organs, except for the heart. The organs would be put in special jars and buried with the mummy. The body would be covered with a special salt called natron for 70 days to dry it out. After that, the body would be wrapped in bandages and placed in a special box called a sarcophagus. Even though this process was time consuming, it was necessary to allow the soul to overcome all the challenges presented before reaching “aaru”, or the afterlife.
