Lots of earthquakes happen in California because a major fault line (the San Andreas Fault) is located underground and cuts through the state of California.  This fault line is where 2 major plates under the Earth's crust come together.

How does a hurricane form?

Hurricanes form in warm ocean waters.  Moisture from the warm ocean evaporates and enters the atmosphere.  This gives the atmosphere heat energy and bands of clouds begin to form.  This energy also creates strong winds that begin to circulate or spin.

Explain the difference between moderate and catastrophic hurricane damage.  Give examples of some damage that might be caused by each. 

Moderate hurricane damage is average or medium in intensity.  With moderate damage some trees and mobile homes might blow over.  Some roads near the coast might flood.

Catastrophic hurricane damage is severe and causes horrible damage. Mobile homes are usually completely destroyed.  Other homes and buildings may collapse and lose roofs.  There is also major flooding.
