The British return with many ships carrying reinforcements, they land in New York. General Washington is defeated in the Battle of White Plains, forced to flee into Pennsylvania. Low point for Americans, most of the Continental Army is killed or forced to surrender

What was the Battle of Saratoga?
Colonists win a major victory at a fort in upstate NY, forcing a large British army to surrender. This major victory convinced the French that the Americans could actually win the war and they soon sent troops to help fight against the British. It also convinces the British that it will be too difficult to fight in the New England/Middle colonies and they focus on the Southern colonies

What was the Siege of Charleston?
British successfully attack Charleston (biggest port city in the south) and start taking over parts of the south. There were more loyalists in the Southern colonies so the British thought that they could have more support from the local colonists. Eventually American generals win a few key battles and end up surrounding Charleston, making the southern campaign an American victory
