The penny has died. At the age of 232, the coin’s final batch was minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 12. There are an estimated 250 billion pennies still in circulation. These will continue to be accepted as legal tender.
In May, the U.S. Mint announced that the cost of producing one penny was nearly four times its value. It expects to save $56 million per year by not producing the coins.
Pennies are no longer being made.

Maya was thrilled with her new bike. It was bright blue with silver sparkles! However, her dad insisted she wear a bulky, bright green helmet every time she rode. Maya thought the helmet looked silly and ruined her cool look, so she would often hide it behind a bush near the end of the driveway before riding. One afternoon, a squirrel darted in front of her wheel, causing her to crash hard onto the pavement. She stood up, shaken, and realized her head had hit the ground with a sickening thump. Thankfully, she had been wearing the ugly green helmet that day. She quickly retrieved it from the driveway and rode back inside, realizing her looks were far less important than her safety.
Safety is more important than appearances.

Many students groan when they hear the word "homework," but those assignments actually serve a very important purpose. Homework helps you practice the skills you learned during the day, making sure the information really sticks in your brain. It also teaches you responsibility and time management, since you have to decide when and where to complete the task before the deadline. While it may seem like just more work, completing your homework is a great way to improve your grades and prepare you for future challenges.
Homework is beneficial for students and is very important.

Liam and Ben were assigned to work on a huge art project together that was due in two days. Ben spent hours drawing the design and cutting out all the pieces, while Liam spent most of his time watching videos and playing games. When they brought the beautiful finished project to school, the teacher immediately praised Liam for his hard work, since Liam was the one who presented it. Liam felt a small victory, but when he saw the disappointed look on Ben’s face, a sudden wave of guilt washed over him. The recognition didn't feel good at all, and he knew the right thing to do. He immediately spoke up, explaining to the teacher that Ben deserved most of the credit

Does the smell of stinky socks make you hungry? The 2025 World Cheese Awards took place on November 13, in Bern, Switzerland. More than 250 judges sampled the best—and smelliest—cheeses from around the world. (In the world of cheese, a strong scent can be a good thing!)
Judges tried more than 5,200 cheeses from 46 countries. They scored them based on flavor, scent, and texture. They also tested the cheeses’ “mouthfeel.” That’s the feeling foods create in the mouth.
This year’s winner was a type called gruyère. It comes from the Swiss town of Gruyères, near Bern. “Anyone who eats it . . . just gets excited about it and wants to go back for more,” said judge Perry Wakeman during the live-streamed judging session.

Mr. Henderson had been trying to build a perfect bird feeder for weeks. His first attempt was too small. His second fell apart the first time it rained. His third design was too complex, and he accidentally glued the little door shut. Frustrated, he threw the pieces into a box and decided to quit. His neighbor, Mrs. Kim, noticed the discarded pieces. She gently told him, "Every failure is just a new piece of information." Encouraged, Mr. Henderson looked at the flaws of the previous designs. Using the parts from all three failures, he built a sturdy, functional bird feeder that was up and running by the end of the day.

I’m going out to clean the pasture spring;
I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away...
(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):
I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too.
15 I’m going out to fetch the little calf
That’s standing by the mother. It’s so young,
It totters when she licks it with her tongue.
I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too.

What is the central idea AND what sentence is the most important piece of evidence.
Mandatory school uniforms are a terrible idea that unfairly limits students' ability to express themselves. While proponents argue that uniforms reduce bullying and distraction, this claim completely ignores the positive impact that personal clothing choices have on a young person's sense of identity and confidence. Furthermore, making everyone wear the same outfit does not solve the root causes of social issues; it merely hides them beneath a layer of identical fabric. Instead of spending money on restrictive clothing, schools should focus on teaching students to respect differences, which is a far more valuable life lesson than forcing conformity.
Mandatory school uniforms are a bad idea because they stifle student expression.

Marco was the fastest kid on the entire soccer team. He could run past anyone and score, but he often didn't pass the ball, believing he was the only one who could win the game. During the championship match, he took every shot himself, missing nearly all of them because the other team kept double-teaming him. In the final minute, his teammate, Sofia, was wide open right next to the goal. Marco had a clear shot but chose to keep the ball, resulting in a blocked kick as time ran out. After the loss, Marco realized that if he had trusted his teammates and passed the ball, they would have won.

What is the central idea of paragraph 1? What is the central idea of paragraph 2?
A tsunami is a series of huge, fast-moving ocean waves. It is a result of earthquakes or other disturbances of the earth’s crust. When a tsunami hits land, its highly destructive waves cause wide-spread flooding and produce dangerous currents that can sweep people, cars, and even buildings back out to sea. Tsunamis can strike within minutes after the event that causes them, so individuals in the tsunami’s path rarely have time to find safety.
In an effort to save lives and property from the destruction of tsunamis, various countries and international scientific organizations have developed early warning systems. They monitor sea-level vibrations in the earth’s crust. Data collected by monitors on the ocean floor are analyzed by a computer model. If the model predicts a tsunami, the system alerts the countries in its path to the tsunami’s size and location as well as the time it is likely to hit. The alert is sent through a network that links the early warning systems of many nations. These early warning systems give people a better chance to survive a tsunami.
1. Tsunamis are very destructive events that happen suddenly.
2. Scientific organizations can monitor activity that might cause tsunamis and alert countries that might be in a tsunami’s path.
What is the theme of this passage?
Alex always wanted the newest, most expensive things. When his grandpa offered him an old, scratched-up leather watch for his birthday, Alex politely accepted it but tucked it away in a drawer. He didn't think much of it until his grandpa passed away a year later. While cleaning out the drawer, Alex found the watch and noticed an inscription on the back: "To my brave son, 1952." Alex's mother explained that the watch had been worn by his great-grandfather who served bravely overseas. Suddenly, the worn-out watch became the most valuable item Alex owned, reminding him of his family's history and the love they shared.
Items with sentimental value are often worth more than expensive new possessions.
