•By the mid-1970s, old public health and the biomedical model had been effective in addressing many leading causes of death.

•Lifestyle related diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease emerged as the leading causes of death and disability.

•Although biomedical interventions could treat some cases, many ended in death.

•Another approach was needed that encouraged people to lead healthier lives. It because known as the ‘social model of health’.
