Which of the following is an example of gravitational potential energy?

A) A stretched rubber band ready to be released

B) A rock sitting at the edge of a cliff

C) A battery powering a flashlight

D) A skateboard rolling down a hill

B. A rock sitting at the edge of a cliff

When you rub your hands together, they start to feel warm. This is an example of which type of energy transfer?

A) Kinetic energy transforming into light energy

B) Kinetic energy transforming into thermal energy

C) Thermal energy transforming into potential energy

D) Potential energy transforming into chemical energy

B. Kinetic energy transforming into thermal energy.

A roller coaster car starts at the top of a tall hill.  It races down and finishes at the bottom of the hill.  Describe the change in energy of the car from the top of the hill to the bottom?

The gravitational potential energy is all transformed into kinetic energy.

200

Where will the roller coaster have the greatest potential AND kinetic energy?

The greatest potential will be at point A.  The greatest kinetic will be at point B.

200

Which would go farther and why: a remote control car with one battery or a remote control car with two batteries.  Give TWO reasons that support your answer.

The car with two batteries.  It has more mass, because of the extra battery, and more chemical potential energy that can be converted into kinetic energy.

Which are types of energy involved when a baseball bat hits a baseball?

A. Gravitational Potential Energy

B. Kinetic Energy

C. Energy Transfer

D. Energy Transformation

B. Kinetic Energy AND C. Energy Transfer

According to the law of conservation of energy, which of the following statements is true?

A) Energy can be created if you use enough force.

B) Energy can be destroyed if it is used up completely.

C) Energy changes form but the total amount stays the same.

D) Energy only exists in moving objects.

C. Energy changes form but the total amount stays the same.

Sort these into kinetic and potential energies:

A moving car, a stretched bowstring, water at the top of a waterfall, a rolling basketball, wind blowing through trees, a swinging pendulum at the highest point of its swing

Kinetic: a moving car, a rolling basketball, wind blowing through trees

Potential: a stretched bowstring, water at the top of a waterfall, a swinging pendulum at the highest point of its swing

Describe what types of energy are shown in both A and B.

A shows elastic potential energy because it has been stretched.

B shows kinetic energy because the ball is moving through the air.

Scientists have devised a new way to transmit radio waves, both above and below ground.  The waves above ground use a perpendicular motion to transmit and those below ground send the wave in the same direction as the energy flow.  What are the waves above and below ground called?

The waves above ground are transverse.  The waves below ground are longitudinal.

Describe how energy is conserved as it is transferred and transformed through the food web. Include the organisms shown.

The grass transforms light energy, from the sun, into chemical potential energy.  When an animal eats the grass, it gets the energy stored there.  As energy travels through each animal, through the food chain, it is conserved because it doesn't disappear, it simply gets transferred to the next animal.
