What is the best way to describe the author's purpose below? Give one reason why. People have been inventing things for thousands of years. A whirlwind of inventions has made its way into our daily lives. Thinking about these inventions may make you feel dizzy. Can you imagine life without electric lights? What about living without television, computers, or automobiles? Nowadays we do not even think about all these handy things that give us so much independence. But there was a time when they did not exist!

It was Gordon's first day on the baseball team. Today his team was facing Billy Fallon, the best pitcher in the league. Fallon's fastball was legendary. Gordon's team had never won a game against him. Fallon struck out the first three players on Gordon's team. But in the second inning, their first batter got on base with a single. The next player hit another single. They had two players on base! Fallon struck out the next two batters. Now Gordon was up. This was his chance to really help the team, but there were already two outs. If Fallon struck him out, the inning would be over. "You don't stand a chance," the catcher muttered under his breath as Gordon walked up to the plate. Gordon knew the catcher was just trying to make him nervous. So he ignored the catcher's insult and paid attention to the pitch instead. Fallon's first pitch came so fast that Gordon flinched. Fallon smiled from his spot on the mound. "It doesn't look like it is going to happen," the catcher said, snickering behind Gordon. The second pitch blazed by Gordon so fast that he barely saw it. The fielders on the other team moved in from the outfield. They knew that this batter would not hit the ball very far. Gordon swung hard on the third pitch. He felt the bat connect with the ball. Everyone gaped with wide eyes and open mouths as the ball sailed over the fence. He had hit a home run! The score was three to zero. It was the best his team had ever done against Fallon. When the inning was over, Fallon walked up to him. "That was a fluke!" he hissed. "Maybe it was," Gordon admitted. "But the next time you face me, you won't be so sure of yourself."
