100

Who were the two main sides of the Cold War?

US and USSR.

It is important in our work to grasp revolutionary truth, Marxist-Leninist truth, and apply it correctly to our actual conditions. There should be no set rule that we must follow the Soviet pattern. Some advocate the Soviet way and others the Chinese, but is it not high time to work out our own?

Who wrote/spoke this?

When was this written?

1946-1947.

200

When did the Cold War begin?

After WWII (post-1945s).

300

"It is important in our work to grasp revolutionary truth, Marxist-Leninist truth, and apply it correctly to our actual conditions. There should be no set rule that we must follow the Soviet pattern. Some advocate the Soviet way and others the Chinese, but is it not high time to work out our own?"

Why is this talking about the Soviets and the Chinese?

Because these were fellow communist countries that were supporting North Korea.

What does this mean? What is happening/what is it describing?

The changing of the relationship between the PRC and the U.S.

300

"Although

What's he talking about? What's going on here?

They were trying to create a communist country, with Mao in charge, but not everyone, including every communist agreed with Mao; plus, many regular everyday Chinese people didn't know what communist was about; young people wanted to teach everyone else what communist was about/force them to be "good" communists.

300

In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.”

Why did Japan write a new Constitution?

Because they lost WWII, were occupied by the U.S., and needed/were required to change.

300

What is an example of a Cold War proxy war? (Explain what a proxy war is.)

The Korean War!

400

"It is important in our work to grasp revolutionary truth, Marxist-Leninist truth, and apply it correctly to our actual conditions. There should be no set rule that we must follow the Soviet pattern. Some advocate the Soviet way and others the Chinese, but is it not high time to work out our own?"

What's this primary source saying?

That North Korea should define it's own way forward (and not just follow the USSR or the PRC).

What is one domestic Chinese explanation for these turns of events?

Growing anger with the USSR.

400

"Although

How does this relate to nationalism?

It was about doing communism "the" Chinese way; which meant Mao's way. (Again, not necessarily directly following the model of the USSR.)

400

In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.”

What does "The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.” mean?

It means Japan can no longer have a standing military.

400

When and how did the Cold War end?

1989/1991: communist fell, the Soviet Union fell.

500

"It is important in our work to grasp revolutionary truth, Marxist-Leninist truth, and apply it correctly to our actual conditions. There should be no set rule that we must follow the Soviet pattern. Some advocate the Soviet way and others the Chinese, but is it not high time to work out our own?"

How is this about nationalism?

Because it's about the nation of North Korea asserting its desire and right to control itself.

500

What is one non-domestic Chinese (explanation from outside of China) explanation for these turns of events?

Cold War: U.S. wanted to split China off from the USSR.

500

"Although

 the

How did this go? Did it work?

It helped spread the ideas of communism, and it cemented communist in the PRC, but it was also brutal: people were harassed, etc.

500

"In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.”

How does this relate to the Korean War?

Japan was occupied by the U.S. military until 1952 (and there is still a large U.S. military presence there today); the U.S. led the support for the South in the Korean War.

500

What was the role of capitalism in the Cold War in East Asia?

It was one of the two main sides in the Cold War; by the end of the Cold War, most places in East Asia were successful capitalist countries.
