What is waste?

Waste- is all the substances that your body does not need so it removes

100

When fat is burned what does it turn into, and how is this waste released from the body?

Carbon dioxide is created and we exhale it out.

100

Who is M'kenna, how old is she, and how many symptoms does she have?

M'kenna is a 13 y/o girl who was healthy then fell sick and she has 10 symptoms.

100

This chemical indicates if there is glucose in a sample

Benedict's solution
100

What is matter?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space

200

What are the organs in the digestive system?

Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines.

200

Why do we need evidence in our models and writing?

We need evidence because it helps support our claim. It shows how we received the knowledge we have.

200

Name 6 body systems, and which of those body systems are impacting M'kenna the most.

1. Circulatory system

2. Nervous system

3. Respiratory system

4. Digestive system

5. Muscular system

6. Skeletal system

200

This chemical indicates the presence of complex carbohydrates in a sample

Iodine

200

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process where two or more substances react which causes their particles to break apart and rearrange to form new substances.

300

What food molecules break down in the stomach and what do they turn into?

Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates

300

What food molecules create waste in a healthy person?

Water and Fiber

300

Which organ in M'kenna had the most damage?

The small intestine

300

What is the job of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine? Be as specific as you can.

Mouth= Physical breakdown of food, chemical breakdown of carbs

Esophagus= transfer broken down food into the stomach

Stomach: breakdown of larger food molecules (fats and proteins)

Small intestine: absorbs broken down food molecules (glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids) into blood

Large intestine (remove waste (fiber+ some water))

300

What do we mean when we say our intestines absorb nutrients? What allows the intestines to do this?

When we say absorb, we mean that nutrients pass through our small intestine, taken by the body into our blood. This is done because there are small holes along the intestine that filter molecules.

400

Name two physical properties of matter.

Color, texture, small, taste,

400

Where do carbohydrates, protein, and fats break down in the digestive system and what do these nutrients turn into?

Carbs=glucose (Mouth), Protein=amino acids (stomach), Fat= fatty acids (Stomach)

400

Name 6 of M'kenna's symptoms

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fatigue, weightloss, muscle cramps, brain fog, difficulty breathing with exercise.

400

What is the name of the procedure that investigates internal organs along the Digestive system with a camera

An Endoscopy

400

What is a property

A unique characteristics that identify matter

500

Which body system did M'kenna not have any symptoms in?

Skeletal System

500

How do nutrients get absorbed in the body? (be specific)

The small intestines is made up of tiny holes that allow small food molecules to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

500

Why do the nutrients reduce to 0 by the time they reach the large intestines?

The nutrients are absorbed into the small intestines.

500

What is the chemical in our spit called and what does it do?

Amylase which is a chemical that breaks down carbs and turns it into glucose.

500

What food molecules does M'kenna have in her waste and why?

M'kenna has water, fiber, carbs, glucose, and fatty acids in her waste because her small intestine is not absorbing these nutrients
